Personal Statement

I am very experienced in the field of ASL. I learned the language when I was 6 years old because my older brother is hard of hearing. My whole family learned ASL and my two sisters became ASL interpreters. I followed in their footsteps and became a ASL interpreter when I was 18 in the Washington D.C. area. Because of this I was able to gain experience interpreting in the fields of education, business, and medical. It has been a joy to have been closely connected to the deaf community for 25 y...

Matthew taught me new words, and checked my skill level. He was engaging, and fun. I liked the fingerspelling trivia to help with my receptive skills. He was also inspiring to my journey which is greatly appreciated! He shared education on proper grammar and ASL that may or may not be most used in real life.

Matthew F. is an enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable sign language instructor. I took ASL a few years ago, but I've forgotten much of what I learned then. Today, Matthew F. helped me to begin remembering what I previously knew, and also taught me additional signs and contextual ways to remember those signs.

Matthew helped me practice my conversational skills. He's very patient and asked great questions to get to know me. He also taught me vocab at times to help me improve my expressive skills. I definitely recommend him as an ASL tutor!

I found Matthew to be a very capable ASL tutor who was happy to work with my own personal learning styles. I appreciated being able to discuss the nuances stylistic issues of native ASL signers that have made it challenging for me to develop my receptive skills. He provided helpful context and great conversational challenges.

Every lesson, Matthew is able to determine what I most need and how to help me improve. He sends me ?homework? to prepare before our sessions, which I find very useful. He?s extremely positive, even when correcting my mistakes. I?m thrilled to be working with him!

Since I'm a beginner in ASL, he's very patient with me and is always happy to slow down or repeat things. He's helping me focus on what I /need/ to know and also the things that will help with what I don't know. I enjoy our lessons!

Matthew was a great teacher and tutor. Altered the lesson plan to help me meet my goals. Emphasized key signs and phrases and repeated them with me until they became muscle memory. Very kind and flexible with times/meeting places.

Great tutor. My son had a wonderful experience and learned a great deal. I wish the summer was longer. I really wanted to continue the lessons to give my son some real world lessons outside of the norm.

Matthew is terrific. He taught five of my grandchildren (ages 7 to 11) sign language. By the end of the summer, they could sign "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". He was very patient with all of them. He is very knowledgeable. A very rewarding experience.

I have been working with Matt for about 4 lessons now (sign language) and very pleased so far. He is very approachable, creates an atmosphere for learning, and flexible with meeting times if I have to rearrange my schedule. He has shown a genuine interest in sign language as a whole as well as my goals behind learning it. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning sign language to just contact Matt for a meet and greet (he and I met at a local Starbucks for our meet/greet) and go from there.
