Personal Statement

My name is Augusto Gonzalez Bonorino and I am originally from Argentina. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors from Marist College (NY) in May 2022 with a double major in Economics and Data Science. Currently, I am a full-time professor of economics theory and econometrics at Pomona College. Moreover, I am working through my Ph.D. in Economics, where I focus on the application of computational models (such as large language models, agent-based models, and simulation-based inference) to economic research. I grew up playing rugby, soccer, skiing, and basketball. At 14 years old I switched to tennis, which eventually gave me the opportunity to pursue my undergraduate education in the United States on Division 1 athletic scholarship. I am a passionate advocate of interdisciplinary endeavors. My latest efforts in merging my interests with other sciences include learning quantum computing for my Honors thesis to solve high-dimensional Matrix Riccati differential equations. Moreover, I worked for four years in the subfield of AI called Natural Language Processing, particularly developing question-answering systems. Finally, a few years ago I started a blog on Medium called Entangled Mind (https://medium.com/@agbonorino), along with a series of Udemy online courses on various topics - in Spanish - with my dad. Check the blog out and let me know your thoughts if you'd like :) At the moment, my research lies on the intersection between experimental/behavioral economics and Large Language Models (https://www.econllm-lab.com/). I focus on studying if LLMs can serve as computational models of human behavior, to then understand incentives within a system and their usage as substitutes of real subjects in costly field experiments. Outside the classroom, I enjoy many activities such as teaching, outdoor sports, reading, exploring new things or places, listening to music, and watching movies. I look forward to getting to know you better and helping you navigate your learning journey.
