I am blessed to have learned from him. Love his 3325 and 3306 courses. His 3309 online course is not as strong but still highly insightful.

He was the first professor I had at Cal Poly Pomona, and he was great! His lectures are interesting and he is always eager to teach his students. He won't call you out if you sleep in class, but he will if you use your cellphone.
He has a midterm and final, each 100 questions. It is hard, but if you actually study whats on the study guide you will be fine.
He also gives you about 10 documentaries to watch, and you have to answer 10 questions per documentary. You would need to complete this by the end of the quarter. Super easy. This was the only homework he gave us and it actually bumped my grade from a C to an A-.
I strongly recommend him.

Pros: Fong is a gifted prof. He keeps it real. Fwiw, the paper is exciting to write. He is using his own published textbook..this means he can teach about cities like it's in his blood. The interactive book is awesome. This is the most interesting class I've taken in sociology nuff said. Now I have an appreciation for cities, like did you know certain streets mix rubber into the asphalt to quiet road noise? Yeah, bet you didn't know that huh. Also, that Pyongyang (N. Korea's capital) was once a model city that many in eastern Europe admired during the Cold War? or that speed cushions reduce speed by 15% while reducing traffic by 25%?
Cons: His final exam is eleven pages. Yes. *eleven* [!] pages :-0 I have never had m/c exams where I had to identify urban features, diagrams, design plans, and maps. But that's what you have to do. Also the midterm is kind of difficult because there is so much to read on the exam.
He is very disciplined. When I found out he's a son of a veteran I understood.
Shut your phones off. He deducts 5 points each time and calls you out on it. This is costly.

Pros: -Dr. Fong is 1 of the best professors in the soc dept!
Cons: -grade based on only midterm, final and 7pg paper = no room for excuses/mess up's!
Professor Fong is 1 of my top 3 professors here at CPP. it seems like no matter what class subject it is he is always so enthusiastic and definitely knows his stuff! He really keeps the class on their toes whenever he is telling a story or simply explaining wtvr the topic it may be. I really enjoy his classes and always seem to do well even with only 3 items making up the full grade. i recommend taking Fong if u have the chance, u wont regret it!
course:
1. midterm= all multiple choice; not too bad
2. final paper=7 pgs on a social issue relating to course
3. final= all multiple choice
4. some films relating to course topics= not boring
5. every class period is full lecture= so you cant miss class theres no powerpoint!

Pros: -Interesting lectures [never boring]
-Talks at a moderate pace so as to allow for students to take notes without feeling rushed!
-Midterm+Final
-Paper due on the day of the final on any topic that relates to the theories discussed in class.
-Very respectful of students.
Cons: None.
Dr. Fong is a GREAT professor. I have taken 2 classes with him before and have enjoyed both of them. He does require textbooks but I was able to pass the classes with As without having to even open the books. His lectures are very thorough and if you attend class & study your lecture notes, you'll do great in the exams.

Pros: Awesome lectures. Passionate about the subjects he speaks about so it makes it easy to remember. Tests were not bad in this class compared to some of the deeper theory classes.
Cons: Your grade is based on 2 tests and a 7 page paper.
I love Professor Fong. He's my favorite professor.

Pros: Amazing, mind blowing lectures. He is an amazing theory professor! Super interesting!
Cons: Your entire grade is based on 2 tests and one final paper. No room to F*** up!
Dr. Fong is an outstanding teacher. You can really feel his passion. Be ready to write non-stop and never miss class. His tests are challenging. The key is to truly understand the essence of each theorist in order to get the answer. His lecture style and tests are somewhat similar to Dr.Loo's. Read, study, ask questions and you can get an A. :)

Pros: Real sharp. Can carefully answer any questions you ask without making you appear like a dumbass. Not a power tripper like some of the others.
Cons: He is anal about your phones. Each time it rings, he will deduct 5 pts. His m/c exams are the hardest you'll ever take because each of the questions are like essays, but he gives reviews before them so be there. Am unsure about the paper as I still have to hand it in lol.
Fong's a gifted professor. He doesn't use powerpt except when showing important issues and diagrams so I had to get used to this but his depth and speaking skills are quite amazing. I have him at 8 in the morning and I have a 9:15 306 class with him after. He switches mental gears immediately between the 2 courses and still blows our minds again.

Being in Dr. Fong's class means experiencing the best of a college education. One of the few professors who takes his job seriously and inspires you with his unbelievable knowledge of the subject. Ways to succeed, take good notes, don't miss any lectures, study and you should do well. He is very friendly and always available for his students. Grade Received: B+

I took his 401 in Winter way back since I heard awesome things about him. Turns out it was the best decision ever! He is deep though, pulling out all these theories, maps, pics, vids, thend statistics. At first I thought whatever, no cities could be like he described. This summer I traveled to Madrid and Barcelona, Spain and just got back from Athens, Greece. Now I can say that he knew his stuff all along and WE were the village idiots, wow! One lecture I'll never forget was the one on the 3rd place. They were everywhere in Spain and Greece. Every city's got one! And it's where you go to party! You should have seen when Spain won the World Cup oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!! Was the class hard? 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 quite challenging term paper. Fong's super hot, super smart, real friendly, great speaker and a total package but he's real anal about cell phones ringing. He's one of the best profs I've ever had at Poly and I learned so much. Take the course and go travel, you'll see! Grade Received: C+

As an older student who served in the armed forces, I find it disappointing to see the vindictive and immature statements made about Prof Fong. Coming back to a screwed up CSU system, I personally think Prof Fong is one person that has made a substantial difference in my outlook on life. Distorted comments are sadly made by immature college losers whose future I was supposed to have protected during my tour. Prof Fong's actually brilliant and super deep and many, many students would agree.
My only criticism is his strong liberalism because I tend to be conservative. But then he's a sociologist and they're all liberal hippies anyway. So it is very sad to see students who don't realize that given the CSU's pathetic situation Prof Fong is one of the few profs left that has passion and brilliance in teaching and knowledge. I feel I still get a genuine education with the guy. The problem with sites like these is that frequently whiners, exaggerators and babies show up here and BS and play their crying games. I want to positively comment about him at a time when the stupid CSU can't get their act together.
}If the CSU is a sinking ship then Prof Fong's courses are rafts in the ocean. He gets to class on time, is always prepared for his lectures and has a great work ethic. Just listen and read your books. I'm beginning to wonder what is worse, the effed up CSU system or a pathetic lot of students feeling entitled yet having super low IQs. If these folks are the Americans of our future our country will be going downhill. Go to Iraq and see what kind of schooling kids over there have and you'll stop whining about dedicated American profs when they exist. Try pulling your iphones and gaming consoles out of your assess and pay attention. You just might learn something you little whining children with leaky diapers.

This instructor really knows what he's teaching. I enjoyed his class because he fully explained the book. He showed us pictures of his research in Thailand I thought that was really interesting. Some people in class found this boring, but I am very open minded and interted in different cultures. I am glad he talked about his research. Also, it gave it a more visual way of learning about research. I liked the fact that he shared his grad school experience and his life in general. I admire the fact that he stands in front of students and knows exactly what to say. His test are not hard. It is better if one reads the book and pays attention to his lectures. Grade Received: B-

Jack Fong is an okay professor. You will walk into this class and you will be bored for the first couple of weeks. His lectures can go off in tangents and sometimes he makes no sense what so ever. Fong talks about how his tests are not just based from the book but it really is. His study guides help some. The documentaries he picks are so boring with the exception of one. His class is based on HIS opinions because that's all you will hear throughout the quarter. He's very anal about attendance. He passes out a roll sheet and if you leave early or sign in and leave he will call you out. He favors students that he likes. Overall I think it's an okay class. But I wouldn't suggest getting on his bad side. Grade Received: A

Jack Fong is the sweetest and most devoted professor I have ever had at Cal Poly. He is gentle and encouraging. He makes you feel important even if you don't say a word in his class. He is the kind of professor that you aim to please. I found that I WANTED to do well in this class just because of the effort that he put into teaching the material. He's an AMAZING person and I HIGHLY recommend anyone to take him. All professors should be this caring and warm. He's also pretty easy on the eyes for all you girls and gay guys. Grade Received: A

Dr Fong is great! He's interesting and funny and keeps the class light even though the topic can be pretty stale. His tests are multiple choice; there's a mid-term and final. He also requires 3 other assignments, 2 which are due early on which are set-up for the 3rd assignment which is a Research Proposal (aka Grant Proposal). This is not an easy paper to write, but I don't think you'll be able to take any BHS205 class without having to write one; I believe that's the required curriculum. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Jack, I highly recommend it. Grade Received: A
