Okay, so i'm not here to talk bad about prof. Pye. If you take a look at all the comments, about a third are ambivilent, another third hates her, and the other third adores her. why is that? who are they? People who took stats and people who took for ex. mat 214 or 216 love her. people who took for ex. mat 11 or mat 112 hate her, and the rest don't really have any hard feelings. I took this professor for mat 112, and mat 115. Failed both with her. when i retooked them, i got A's. Did I try harded, no... I always tried hard in her class. Problem is that if it is the first time you see that material and she doesn't give you any hints as to what may be in the exams, you will have a hard time in the exam. based on the people that i asked in both classes, about more than half of us failed. I'm not gonna lie, she does explain things really well, but she isn't lenient enough. I would recommed this professor if it is the second time taking the course otherwise, think about it twice. If you want to be challenged take her. or figure out what classes she is good at teaching and which classes she is not. Grade Received: D+

She is really nice in my opinion. She gives a 10 minute break in class which is pretty cool. The tests are kind of hard and the homework is not worth that much. Many people in my class struggled but it was because they would only show to class occasionally. It is not based on attendance. If you go to class and genuinely try then you should be good. I had an A- going into the final and then bombed it because I didn't study and got a B in the class. She was super cool. Grade Received: B
good teacher. she's very active when teaching, so you might catch her jumping all over the place to help you understand the problem. homeworks are and easy 5 points when you do them. there are two quizzes, two midterms and one final. final is 200 points and midterms are each 100 points. quizzes are 10 points each. if you took calculus before..everything will be easy. there are some things that might be new..but her teaching will clear most of it up. take her if she's available! Grade Received: A
i hated her class...she taught us how to do things the long way and she constantly went off topic....she grades homework rediculously DUMB....if you skip one or two problems in your homework that you did not understand....she will give you like a 3/5 for not completing it all....she grades the test the same way....if you do not show the work on how SHE taught she'll mark points off....she tends to do that alot....i would not take her class again if i had the chance....shes a nice lady but her way of teaching is more words and letters on the bored than numbers...and its a MATH class.... Grade Received: D
Mrs. Pye is an outstanding professor. The way she teaches and explains math is unique and intriguing. She knows her math well enough to be able to receive an A for her teaching ability. Not just that, she is also one of the friendliest professors I have met and always has a smile on her face. When helping others, her clarity of explaining things is one of the greatest. Her class was reasonable, not too hard yet not too easy. On the first day she gave us a paper with all the homework that was going to be done throughout the quarter. This was great because if we wanted to, we could get ahead on the homework. Her exams were reasonable as well and were not done in scantrons. If you paid attention in class and kept up with the homework, you should have no problem acing one of her exams. Grade Received: B
Knowledgable but has no way of relaying info to the students. Her lectures are really, really boring. She gives 2 quizzes, 2 midterms and 1 final. She doesnt give any study guides. She just says, know chapters 1-4, 5-7 etc. She grades extremely hard and gives very minimal partial credit. On a midterm a problem was worth 10 points and i got minus 9 for making the answer negative. I would not recommend this teacher at all. Only 7 out of the 30 people in the class passed. OK. Most of the students who take his class, just came out of high school or they are majors in math...unlike me i took geometry about 5 years ago, and i did not take trig (dint need it). So he expects everyone to already be familiar with the material, since he thinks he is just reviewing. You cannot understand what he is saying, teaches materials for assingments that you already turned in, and he goes on and on, on how math is important for our everyday life!! He sucks! I dont recommend him to anyone!
Interesting. Not good, bad, or tenured. Pye is a nice and effective teacher, yet her 216 is not so easy. Her lectures are well-organized so you would need to go to EVERY one and take good notes(although sometimes she writes too much--you can skip all the wordy stuff). But if you look alive you'll understand the information. Now the homework-- Good side: Will help you understand the material and prepare for the tests. Bad side: It's looonnnnggg. Her tests are hard, too. You have to memorize a couple proofs for each one, and you need to know how to apply what you've learned. Again, good teacher and stuff, but hard class. You may find yourself spending too much time studying for her midterms and final.
Although she is quite different then most teachers, I found her teaching style very admirable. She used a lot of redundant statements so even if you didn't quite catch what she was saying, it would come back 6 or 7 times during the class. But not in a bad way. I entirely recommend her for serious students, she is one of the best math teachers... she puts a reasonable challenge on students. She is clear. She is strict though, she won't bend to help you out if you screw up during her year though. I got an A- without studying, and only doing the homework to my best ability.
She is the best profesor I have taken. There is a bit of homework but you don't have to turn it in. I recommmend you do it, seens there is 3 quizzes on the home work. this quizes are easy just keep up with the homework. Also the test are problems from homework. You have to take 2 test and a final. she is the best, she works all the HW problems on the weekend and gives the solutions to you so you can prepare for the test. She will allways help you on office hours, and she explains everything in really simple terms. the only bad thing is she writtes a bit fast, so you have to keep up. If you keep up with the HW you get an easy A.
Great teacher for Linear Algebra. Her lectures are well explained w/ lots of examples. Expect to attend all lectures make sure you fully understand them. She's always willing to help should you have any lecture/homework questions. I love the fact that she doesn't collect homework which allows me to work at my own pace. Expect to keep up w/ all homeworks and do more problems than assigned, at least most of odd problems. If you don't like doing homework or don't care for understanding Math, don't waste your time taking Ms. Pye. Take someone else who gives you an easy pass. I would take her again.
Ill begin by saying im no slacker maybe that will help you listen to me better. i was there everyday took notes studied and went to her for help in her crazy office hours. Pretty much 2 midterms 1final. you mess up on that 1st midterm your really screwed. she is approachable and always willing to help in her office hours but the problem with her is that the tests are about stuff that isnt from the lectures or the book. her excuse is challenge you more. im like if you dont know how to do something how can you do it. all i can say is DONT TAKE HER! DONT TAKE HER! unless you want to waste 10 weeks or theres no one left.
How dare you losers call Mr. Pye a bitch. This is a comment that goes out to everyone who reads off of this site, the people who use profanity and vulgarity when posting a comment on this web site are low life slackers who don't even have the decency to speak in an adult manner. I'm currently taking Mr. Pye and she is by far one of the best teachers I ever had in mathematics. She is really kind and explains the entire concepts thoroughly. I once told her that I wished she taught Engineering classes because she explains everything so well. I really don't know how people can talk so much crap about her!! For all you guys who talk so much shit, I recommend you drop out of college and challenge yourself to a career that would be more suitable for yourself; Burger King, Del Taco, the Car wash, etc. Anyways, for everyone else, Mr. Pye is great; she doesn't collect homework but be sure to do it if you want to ace the class for sure!
I didn't listen to any of the comments posted about this teacher. I thought they were just the slackers in the class. I was SO WRONG! My god...if you wanna waste 10 weeks of your life in this class then by all means go ahead! Pye doesn't grade on a curve. Wait till you hear the freakin BS explanation she gives on why she doesn't! Promotes competition...MY ASS! She goes quick over the materials in class and doesn't answer any HW questions at all. When I took her class, she had outrageous office hours and there was no way for me to get any help from her at all. THe midterms are HARD and so is the final. It covers not only stuff thats in lectures and 'hw', but also things that aren't covered in it either. Don't miss any classes or else your screwed. I worked my ass off in this class and got a D. I only knew three people out of the entire class of maybe 35 that passed. So if you like surprise questions on midterms, being lost in class room lectures, and having one of the worst teachers (and I use that word loosly), then take this class and fail like many others before you. AVOID AT ANY COST!
I wouldn't reccomend this instructor unless you have a natural knack for math. While you certainly can't accuse her of being unfair most of the students struggled. She will take time out to help you, even if it means meeting at 7am in the morning. But if you do find yourself in her class i'd recommend getting a good tutor without delay, because you'll probably need one! I think the problem is that she goes pretty quickly and never reviews, so if you don't pick up the concepts right away you get lost. I ended up with a C, but i had to work really hard to get it, and that class ended up dominating all my other courses. We were graded on 2 midterms, a final and 2 case studies. Homework doesn't count for anything, but you should do it, just the same.
First of all, Pye is an excellent teacher if you want to learn something in the class and also don't have any other classes to worry about. Her system was like this: 25 pts on the essay, 300 pts on the 2 midterms and 200 pts on the final. Her midterms are hard if you don't do all the problems in that current section becuase she would throw in proofs and definitions on her exams. LET ME WARN YOU GUYS OUT THERE, DON'T SLACK OFF IN HER CLASS! ALSO DON'T TAKE HER FOR GPA BOOSTER BECAUSE SHE CAN MAKE YOU STRUGGLE ALOT IN HER CLASS! Overall, I got a B+ in the class because I work my ass off in her class.
She is an ok teacher. She is very strict on the grading scale that she gives. If you are use to using calculator and are kind of dependent on it, then DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, but if you can do most of your basic math quickly w/o a calculator, then this would be a good teacher to take. She shows a lot of work on the board, and most of the time clearly shows the steps but it is boring in her class, so try to stay awake. Her exams are alright, a little more difficult thou. She tries to give points when possible, so on the test, if you can just set up the problem, then just write what you would do next and steps to get the end result, you would most likely get most of the points for that problem.
Well, Pye was adequate at explaining concepts. She writes very fast. I felt that i learned in her class. I worked my ass off and failed however. This concerns me especially since i fell i have a strong grasp of the concepts even now. Your grade is based on 2 tests. They are hard. There is no curve and I suspect that only one person recieved an A in the class of about 32. A few B's maybe but mostly D's and F's even those who participated and worked hard failed. Blow a test and your screwed.
Ok, I took her for mat 112 and worked my ass off but only got a D+ .. I blamed the POS book they write here at the campus for the grade i got. Now i took her for 114 and didn't pass that course either! This lady is definately an instructor and not a TEACHER. She teaches to the people who have taken this course before not to any person who is new to the material. You have to memorize proofs, write an essay, memorize definitions, and do everything HER way or you get 0 points. She is a terrible grader and half-ass gives partial credit with no curve whatsoever. Do yourself a favor and drop her if you haven't taken the material before! |
