Pros: The class has almost no homework
Very nice teacher
Cons: Teacher is late
No point system can affect your grade tremendously
I feel like she choose favorites throughout the class and she would only give good grades to them
If your good at public speaking then this is a easy class for you to where all you have to do is suck up to the teacher a little and deliver a confident speech otherwise i would not suggest taking the class .If you are not comfortable in a speaking in front of a class she is not going to help you improve your speaking skills .

Pros: came late every single class
nice and approachable
Cons: came late every single class
First off Professor Franko is a very nice person. She is very friendly and I am glad to have taken her class. She was kind enough to place her own textbook in the library for students so we didn't have to purchase/ rent one. There are 1 informative speech, and 2 persuasive speeches, 3 hw assignments and 1 final (50 multiple choice/ True false q's). She came late to almost every single class since my class was the first class she taught every morning and so parking was tough since the class started at 9:15 am. In the beginning it was annoying since she came about 10-15 mins late every time, but then as the quarter went on the whole class caught on and everyone just began to show up late as well so YAY shorter lecture.... but then it came near time for the final so everyone was stressed and was annoyed about how we were expected to pass the final when she came late everyday. Then 2 wks before the final she announced half the final would be take home since we would need the Final exam day to finish up speeches that were pushed day after day since she was always late. So in the end it all worked out!!
Overall she is a great professor. She doesn't mind helping you out with your speech. You can send in your outline the day before you speak and she will review the whole thing for you and tell you if your missing anything.

Pros: -She is very nice
-Really easy to pass the class
-Lets you choose your own topics
-Posts everything on blackboard
Cons: -Nearly impossible to get an A
-Always late to class
-Kept us after the final to do presentations
-Not a debate class but a speech class
-No point system
My thoughts regarding professor Franko are somewhat confusing. I like her as a person but dislike her as a teacher. She is a very nice person who is very understanding and will excuse absences with good reason. However, she does not use a point system in the class, which leads me to think that she just gives students whatever grade she feels they deserve without looking too much into their past work. I felt as if she would give students a good grade if she liked them and vice versa for if she does not. However, she is very fair with the class. She lets us choose whatever topic we want to present and has us do a problem speech and a solution speech about that topic. She then has us chose another student's topic to refute their position for the last speech. It is really easy to get a B on the speeches but I only know one person who got an A. She does not give solid grades but gives grades like A/A- or B+/B which can be very confusing when computing our own grade. I got a B/B- for the first speech and an A-/B+ on the second speech. I do not know what I got for my refutation speech because it was scheduled for the final day and she did not have enough time to grade it and give it back. Each speech has to be done with an outline that must be turned in. A huge chunk of the speech grade is based on the outline and the works cited page so one must make sure they write that out well to get a good grade. I would definitely recommend this professor for students looking to pass this GE but I do not recommend her for students looking for an A in the class. She also gave us three take-home quizzes which were fairly easy. The majority of the grade relies on the speeches she gives. She also gave us a 50 question final which was not too bad. Grade received: B+

Pros: There is not too much work in her class. She is very friendly and replies to emails quickly. If you need help finding information for your speeches, she replies to emails with several sources you can use. She gets quizzes and grades back by the next class usually.
Cons: She showed up 15 minutes late to an hour long class every day. She is very unorganized and it gets frustrating. She grades pretty harsh on speeches.
Don't need the book. Overall, I would prefer not to take her again, but if I had to I wouldn't be completely upset. Grade Received: B

She is biased on certain students, and its quite obvious of it too. She would select her favorites in the class and be quite generous of them when grading and speaking to them directly. The class itself was easy. Consists of a few speeches that were made in front of the class and then you would get graded by her, as well as an overall grade from your classmates. The overall grade you receive would still be up to her though, which is where if you're one of her favorites, good for you.

Pros: She is a very comprehensive professor and is willing to help students. On speeches. She goes easy on students when presenting.
Cons: She is really unorganized and not to mention late to class all the time. Her grading scale is weird and makes no sense. She tends to pick favorites in her class. Her homework hardly makes sense. She counts attendance.
She a nice person, but bot so great of a professor.3 speeches total for the quarter, along with homework and take home quizzes. The final is in class. The course is easy overall, you dont learn much in class its common sense. If you dont like speaking in public this is the class to take because its where they do the less amounts of speeches. I bs the homework and got good grades most of the time but she always gives two grades on all assignments. I recommend the class just for the easy grade not for the learning experience lol

This class was pretty enjoyable. It is composed of 3 HW assignments, 3 take home quizzes, and 2 speeches (1 informative and 1 persuasive), and a true/false multiple choice exam (which wasn't too difficult). I'd say about half of the meetings are student presentations and the other half are PowerPoint notes. The notes are taken directly from the book and posted on blackboard after the meet. So, if you miss class, that's a good way to catch up. She does take attendance in class though. Your allowed to miss 2 meets without it affecting your A in attendance. Overall it was pretty enjoyable listening to all the informative and persuasive speeches on different topics, and i enjoyed giving my own speeches. I definitely recommend this professor.

I think she is a great teacher. She makes sure that we understand what we are arguing and how to make arguments and counter-arguments and allows us to ask her all the questions we need and she gives us her feedback about our presentations grades us fairly easy.

I had a lot of fun in this class, the teacher is very nice. There are 3 speeches, 1 informative and 2 persuasive. About 3 homework assign. and 3 take home quizzes, and a final. Visuals are very important in your speeches, during your speech people in class evaluate you and you get to see what they write. After, you turn the evaluations to the professor. It's kind of hard to get an A on the speeches. Even if the whole class gives you an A she doesn't really follow them. She posts examples of previous speeches on blackboard, just follow the example. If you sign up for a speech day and you end up not being ready, she's very nice and lets you do it another day. Attendance counts! she gives you 2 freebies, after that you get points deducted. For the final review the quizzes, she gives you a study guide too. Grade Received: B

Despite what others say, she was not a bad teacher. Her information follows much of the book, but she does put a few interesting tidbits in. Basically, she wants you to make an effort. She stated off the bat she doesn't like to give A's, but its more of a ploy to get people to work. There are three big presentations, some midterms, and a final. Simply study the material from the study guides and her examples and you'll do fine. The biggest thing she seems to want is for you to show inprovement, which can be troublesome if you start out real well. Also, if you want a good grade, try doing something clever or creative with your powerpoints. She really likes those. Overall, I enjoyed this teacher. I reccomend her! Grade Received: A

I don't know why everyone is saying she's such a horrible teacher! She is a bit unorganized, but really wants her students to get good grades. She will give you lots of topics and ideas for your speeches and give you help with researching them. It is not hard to get an A, she spells out her requirements for you and as long as you do what she expects, it's a no brainer! I liked her and would take her again! Speeches were not bad, take home quizzes, and an easy midterm and final. Grade Received: A

There was no real homework for the class. There are three presentations to do, one in-class midterm, one take-home midterm, and an in-class final. The presentations were fun, but do require some research and time in order to be well-prepared. She always left class to go to her office to get the papers she forgot, or went back to move her car because she parked illegally. She is okay with using the old editions of the book so you spend $5 instead of $80. From what I heard, she rarely gives A's. Grade Received: B+

Without this teacher, I don't think that I would have passed this dreadful topic. The book is only used for part of the class, and she sometimes has old editions that she will loan out to people. She gives a couple small, easy quizzes, some of which are take-home. She gives 2-3 small, easy homework assignment. Both the final and midterm are moderately long, but not at all hard. You will give 1 informative speech and 2 persuasive speeches. Very forgiving when it comes to late assignments and missed classes. The only things to watch out for are the speeches and outside critique if you're lazy. Get these done early or she'll know you threw them together at the last minute. Grade Received: B

She's a nice lady but I don't think she likes giving A's. I don't know anyone in my class that got an A on any of their speeches. She assigns 3 or 4 speeches but she never goes into specifics about what she wants you to do or say. She just lets you do whatever you want until you actually present then after you are done giving your speech she'll tell you what you should've said. She only assigns 3 homeworks, which aren't too bad. But overall you don't actually learn anything in her class, she is too unorganized.

FOR EVERYONE TAKING COM DO NOT TAKE THIS TECHER!!!! I highly do NOT recommend her. She is unclear or how she wants her speeches and argues with everything u say. The book is expensive and useless!!! trust me u dont need the book! her test are usually on the her lectures. there is a midterm and a final and 3 speeches. It isnt hard but even if u put ur heart and soul in the speech she would not give u an A. Majority of the class got C's or lower. The only people that were lucky and got B's were suck ups big time. DONT TAKE HER!!! Shes also very UNORGANIZED!! her notes are all over the place, make sure u write the notes fast if u have to end up with her. Good Luck, not taking her is the better choice!

Franko is a woman who basically grades you on specific content. If you don't amaze her, but you do well, she'll give you a B. No questions asked. If you do fairly, she'll give you a C. Nothing new there. In other words, she's like a robot who only tunes in on what a 'perfect' speech contains. If you are a slave to the book and do exaclty everything it says, then you will receive your A, regardless of how you mess up your speech or what not. It is true though that really bad speeches get the same grade as fairly good speeches. So unless you are going to try all out for this class, you'll get your A. If not, just kick back and do your work. You'll pass with no effort at all. To be honest, getting a B doesn't require much effort at all, it's almost as if she gives everyone a C or B. No one I knew failed, even though some people were pretty bad speakers. So do what you like, you can't go wrong with her but you aren't getting the best deal out there either.

I heard she was an easy teacher, but she's not that great as it turned out. For her class, you give 3 speeches. She makes you read almost all of the chapters in the book, then she lectures about them. Gives 3 homework assignments and a paper. Final is given, multiple choice. I dont' think she's a fair grader. Some people gave crappy speeches and she gave them the same grade as others who gave very good speeches. She gives you good grades if she likes you or likes your topic. Very partial to certain topics. BEWARE!

After reading the reviews, a couple of my friends and I signed up for the class thinking that it was going to be an effortless, easy public speaking class. NOT TRUE. The homework is a pain in the ass (even though there are only three assignments all in all) but I never once got an A on it. Typed out and everything. As for the speeches, she grades extremely hard on those as well. I think that she changed her system from the previous quarters due to the reason that she realized that the class was too easy. This isn't a 100 level course... it requires a lot of work, research... and even if u give it your all I wouldn't expect to get an A. It's hard to fail or get a D in though as well... she makes it so that mostly everyone ends up in the C range.

This is an extremely sweet lady. You really don't have to read the book in this class. Just attend all class meeting and everything said and done in class will be on the final which is the only test you have to take. I still don't know which grade I got from her class, but even with a B I still am happy I took her. She's very caring, understanding, and give you 2 free absence so the attendance thing is not that bad. Get on her good side and you can almost always A all speeches.
