Cons: Her homework can be used for practice but 85% of the problems you do will not be on the exams. Its almost pointless in this case to do the math homework. She grabs her questions from the quizzes that she gives you and some of the quizzes can be rather difficult. These are the types of questions she will put on the tests. She will also grab questions from lecture. She is a pretty harsh grader. You will get so many points marked off for forgetting to write down proper notations, like parenthesis, brackets, derivative signs, etc. Most of my tests were marked off because of notations. As a matter of fact I got 3 low B scores for my 3 tests because of getting marked down for notations. The first test has a special problem and she won't tell you what it is. The special problem is usually some type of word problem, or concept problem asking you to explain something. It is worth 10 points and it can drop you down a whole letter grade. This special problem is only seen on the first test though. The second and third test only get harder though. I believe the third test was the hardest due to the fact that Implicit and optimization were on that test.
The best thing about the class is that she drops your lowest midterm and takes your highest 4 quizzes but be warned, since she does drop them, she doesn't grade as easily as people might expect or give out easy problems. The problems are difficult and it usually requires people to work together in order to solve them. She always has some type of "trick" to her problems and there will be at least one or two of those kinds of problems on her tests. Her tests are not easy. Make sure you study hard for the first two tests because they only get harder. Be warned now. Overall, I say she's a good teacher. She drops a lot of things, and it is only fair that she does grade a bit harder for allowing you take quizzes home. If you like doing a lot of group studies then take her because there will be a lot of those if you want to succeed in this class on quizzes and exams.
Grade received: B+
Cons: Tests are difficult. The first test was easy The second test was the hardest due to volumes, and the third test was the easiest. Doing homework in her class is pointless. She doesn't collect it and she doesn't take her exam questions from the homework. Sometimes her exam questions might not even reflect the quizzes or lecture. They might be new problems you have never seen before and she expects you to know how to solve it. This is usually the case with graphs. Make sure you check her old exams that she allows you to see so that you can have an idea of different types of problems. She doesn't grade as harshly as she did in 114 in terms of not writing down notations. In 114 she would take off 3 or 5 points for forgetting to write notations, but this time she calmed down. I can't say the same for your class though.
Class is very chill. I'd recommend it if you like study groups and getting together in order to do quizzes, and study for her exams. That is how you succeed in this class. She will give you outlines for her exams and just like in her 114 class she will give you one special unknown problem on exam 1 so be prepared. She is a good teacher, I can't say I would recommend her because although she does drop a lot of quizzes and tests, she is still somewhat challenging, not exactly easy. Her lectures don't exactly cover everything that will be on the exam either. (this is also the case in her 114 course) Just be wary of this when you decide to enroll in her class.
Grade received: A-
great lecturer
Cons: doesn't teach you everything you need to know
frequently absent (10+ times)
homework not reflective of test
book sucks but it's all you got, so do those proofs
she's really lazy. she's a very nice, pleasant person, but she fails to show up to class every chance she gets i feel like. her final was not easy by any means, so come prepared. she was absent so much she let us replace our previous two midterms with our final grade if it was higher. thankfully mine was and I pulled an A in the class. she doesn't grade on + or - system really unless it benefits you more. homework was pretty easy. offers rare extra credit. grades very very harshly on your tests. grades leniently on homework.
-nice, helpful
Cons: -missed class a few times (she got injured though)
Gave about 8 quizzes, took the top 4 scores. (always does this, doesn't matter how many quizzes are given, she only takes the top 4 scores) Most quizzes are take-home, so you can use your notes and other people in your class. Three exams, takes top 2 scores. Gives outlines for each exam and final. If it's not on the outline, its not on the exam. Exams are straightforward, she doesn't try to trick you. She's very nice and helpful, and actually takes the time to teach you so that you learn. I took her for 115 as well, she's a great professor.
GRADE RECEIVED: A
- most quizzes are taken in class with help from notes, the book, and classmates
- some quizzes are take home
- always gives an outline of each test, so you'll know what to expect
- gives 3 tests and drops the lowest one
- gives at least 5 quizzes, only keeps 4 highest scores (gave my class a total of 10 quizzes)
- gives hw but doesn't collect any
- has very neat writing
- will answer any question
- very helpful and quickly responds to e-mails
Cons: -no graphing calculators used in class or on tests/quizzes
Dr. Linton is a very good professor, she explains calculus concepts in a way that is easy to understand. If there is something that is complicated to understand, don't be afraid to ask her questions; she is willing to answer any question or provide clarification. She also responds fairly quickly to her e-mails if you don't have time to visit her during office hours. Grades, test outlines, and other class items/ memos are posted on blackboard. She does not curve her grades but she only keeps 2 out of 3 tests which are worth 100 points each; you will also receive a detailed outline for each test. Only 4 highest quiz grades are kept, she says she will give at least 5 quizzes but ended up giving my class a total of 10 (it doesn't matter how many quizzes she gives, she will only keep the top 4). Each quiz is worth 25 points, she gives some pop-quizzes, and some take-home ones, but most will be taken in class and she allows you to use notes, classmates, and the book, however some quizzes are taken normally (with no help). Most in-class quizzes will be announced. She has one final worth 150 points. The final is cumulative, however she will give you a detailed outline for the final and anything not on the outline will not be on the final. Sometimes she gives you extra points on tests and quizzes when you show very detailed steps. There are no graphing calculators allowed on the tests and quizzes but sometimes she lets you use a simple calculator on the tests and quizzes. She usually uses "nice numbers" on her tests and quizzes so if you get a really weird number, you know you probably did something wrong. She assigns homework but does not count it towards your grade, but make sure you do it because it will help you prepare for tests and quizzes. Grade Received: A
Partial credit usually
take home quizes
Cons: never grades homework but assigns it everyday
usually no calculators
shes worth taking. math is easy and her quizes are sometimes tricky so know your stuff and you should be completely fine
Cons: She misses class often since she lives in the mountains and gets snowed in at times. (But it doesn't really affect our grades or learning)
AMAZING professor. I won't take anyone else besides Linton for calculus. Take her if you can!!!
