Pros: Definitely has a thorough understanding of what he is teaching and he teaches at a reasonable pace
Cons: Boring

Mind-numbing
I am writing this review before I get my grade so I am not biased in any way.
I am thinking that Redona has changed in recent years. He does not do any of the things the other commenters here say he did. He does not post lecture notes online, he does not curve grades, he does not give extra credit, and he does not give practice exams.
For our class he did replace your lowest midterm grade with %40 of your final grade (which only helps if your are failing miserably), and he did give us practice questions in addition to the homework, but they were nothing like the test. In fact they were extremely misleading.
His tests were average difficulty I suppose, but his practice questions are so different from the test you have no idea what to expect. This means you have to know EVERYTHING. He even makes you derive certain formulas and theorems, but you have no idea which he will make you derive.
Homework isn't really checked by him, but he will go around to see whether you did it or not and give you a score of 1-5. Homework is only worth 20/400 points (%5) which is about as small as you can get for a Math class. It is barely worth doing for %5 other than for practice, but he assigns a LOT of problems.
In terms of his actual teaching ability I agree that he definitely knows what he's talking about and from talking to him one on one I can say he is a very nice person. However... his class, to me at least, was insufferable. He made me feel like I had ADD. I could not follow anything he was saying!
For example, I went to the final exam review just the other day and by now only half the students actually show up to class. He spent the entire class working out only 4 problems. When he works out the problems he will often only talk to himself and not address the class. Occasionally he will ask whether everyone is following, but nobody ever answers because it is a boring Math class. You have to have a little enthusiasm at least to keep people's attention in a class like this and unfortunately Redona has NO enthusiasm at all.
Overall I WISH that I could recommend Redona, but I just can't. I didn't learn one thing from him because he is just too boring. I had to learn everything on my own by reading the book and watching videos online. He is not a horrible teacher so I can give him 1 star and he is below average so I will give him 2 stars. Unfortunately I wish that I had had the same experience with him as I read others had, but unfortunately I simply can not recommend him.

Pros: Teaches at an awesome pace
Will make sure everyone unerstands
Gives study guides and practice test
Cons: Study guide and practice test do not reflect all material on midterm
Professor Redona is an awesome professor. He is very thorough with his lecture and give many examples. He will take his time and make sure everyone understands. He teaches very slow an will not rush through anything. He also gives practice tests and study guides, one thing is that you need to make sure you dont study these solely because the guide and practice test tend to be alot easier than the actual midterm. So study the homework read the book as well and you will be fine.Overall this is not a difficuy course, just stay on top of your work and visit office hrs

Pros: -Great teacher
-homework is checked on days of the exam only and he just skims through it.
-explains things very well
Cons: People say his test are hard but that's because those people don't really try or even do the homework. I'm a math major and I'm telling you that if you study the material and understand it, then you will pass with an A or a B.
He is good. Knows his stuff. Explains it well. Easy grading rubric. You have to study if you want to pass the class. You can't expect to get an easy A in a calculus class. If you want to learn, then take him.

It seemed as if he had never taught MAT114 before, but he had. He provides notes for the material that will be covered. **He is definitely one of those professors who will give east examples in class then assign harder problems for homework and put complicated problems on the exams.**
Grade received: B (he doesn't do pluses or minuses)

Pros: Curves quite often
Makes it as easy as possible
Posts answers to hw online
Cons: None
He is a great teacher. He really wants the class to understand the material. There was a quiz every week but his study guide would be the same, just a few numbers changed but if you can do it on the study guide, you can do it on the quiz. Same goes with the 2 midterms and final. His project is to write an essay on a problem. Hw is due everytime there is a midterm, but don't procrastinate.

Redona is a great teacher. I hadent taken a math class in over 2 years and the last class i took was stats so after finding out that i needed Calculus i was terrified to say the least. Redona was the perfect teacher to take, he teaches slow and in depth until you understand it. I'm so lucky i chose him. his class consists of two tests and optional homework. when i say "optional homework" i mean that all the homework is due on the test days and also its only worth 5 points each time you turn it in, and he just skims over it to see how much of it youve done, you get 5pts for having it all done, 4 points for most done, 3 pts for half, and so on. so the homework is pretty much there to practice. Redona also gives out practice tests that are very similar to the actual test. all you have to do is do the practice tests a couple times until you're cmofortable with the stuff and you're garenteed a good grade on the tests. so if youre scared about taking calc, dont be, if you take Redona.

Professor Redona is a very friendly professor and he treats all students with courtesy. His class had a basic layout of two exams, homework and a comprehensive final. He gives study guides or past quizzes as review and he'll actually take class time for a review before an exam. Study that and you'll be fine. He doesn't collect homework, but will check if you did it, and has you grade yourself. Overall, it's A LOT of material for a 3 unit class, so you need to keep up. Also, he posts lecture notes online so you just need to follow along because he copies the exact examples on the board. He's a lenient grader, so if you think you totally bombed an exam, guess again, you probably did a lot better than you think. Review the last sections in chapter 14 really well! Grade Received: B

I highly recommend you take Prof. Redona if possible; He's one of the few instructors at CP that actually cares about his students, not like the others that just brush you off & seem annoyed or pretend they're listening to you. I always felt welcome in his office and he gave great advice. He will motivate you to do good. Redona, you are great!! Grade Received: C

I think it was his first time teaching the class. This class goes at a blistering pace. There are 2 midterms, 5 quizzes and 1 final. You are not allowed any notes or calculators. All integration and derivatives are done by hand. You need to remember trig identities, integration by parts, and all the rules regarding the natural log and e to succeed in this class. He will go over the techiniques you need to know. If you have been using a T-89 all of your math life you will be in trouble. Homework is due at each test and you write your own grade for the HW on the test.
}His tests are thorough, but if you study the old quizzes and the "you try" problems he posts on Blackboard, you will have no trouble. He is a friendly guy and is not out to fail anyone. It's not the easiest class, but it is not hard if you put in a little effort. For an easy A take Griffith. If you can't take him Redona is good. Avoid Miller at all costs. Good luck. This is the teacher to take. He his the best math teacher I have ever had in my life!!! He helps you understand everything that he teaches you, it is ral easy to get a A in this class. Also he gives a lot of extra credit, which is really simple. His test are also very wasy and doable. This is the t4eacher to take if you don't pick up on math qucikly. In additon to that, right before a teast or quiz he goes over questions that are similar to nes that wioll; be on the test, to make sure you understand. Overall, I loved this teacher!!! if you want a gpa booster take this teacher. if you take advantage of what he tells you in class you are almost guarenteed an A.he does not want anyone to fail. He is always giving extra credit and extra points here and there. his practice tests are exactly like his actual tests. basically to do bad.. you have to not go to class, not pay attention, and not do any work. my experience was great, EASY Grade Received: A

I wish Redona taught more math classes. Too bad the one I had was a stupid CML class. If we didn't have to do as much on the computer, I think I would have aced the class. Redona is the nicest guy! He's very understanding, just don't abuse that because he might not be so nice anymore. He really caters to the students. He's not one of those teachers who thinks school is always at the top of the list even when things happen. He understands that we are humans and probems arise beyond our control. Redona is one of the best teachers by far, taking the time to sit by you, to answer any questions you may have before a quiz or practice test. It seems like this was a privately tutored session. Wish he taught another class I would need. Grade Received: C+

i highly suggest you take this teacher if you have difficulty with calculus. he hands out notes at the beginning of each section and has examples worked out for you. so if you dont understand what he went over in class you can practice it at home. he teaches what you should have already known for the class he constantly reviews as well as teaches new material. i am so glad i took him. i highly recomend him. he is a great teacher

This is the best math professor I have has thus far at Cal Poly! He is really concerned about his students and their understanding of the material, and he adds jokes to help amuse the class. Other people have failed statistics, but with him I don't think anyone can fail because he teaches so well! I HIGHLY recommend taking him. Homeworks are due the day of the tests, and he gives partial credit if you do not get the answers fully correct on the exams.

Pros: The professor is very nice, gives you note packets so taking notes in class is not needed, very helpful when you go to his office hours, tests are straight forward, lets you have a notecard on the final. Homework is moderate and he assigns usually odds problems only.
}Cons: Very little office hours, does not give a lot of partial credit when grading the tests, if you have a good reason then he will give you partial credit if you ask for it, no calculator, no notecards during the midterms, gives you extra credit but it is very lengthy and you get little points (and it only benefits those who have a low grade) if you want to boost your A to a higher A it won't be worth it. He teaches nice and slow at the beginning but tends to rush the last few sections.

He is the most patient teacher I have ever had! Yes, like a previous reviewer said, he does go through EVERY detail, which is great for students horrible in math. Although he does not always check homework or grade them (you grade them yourself by telling him how much you've done), try to finish it because it is very easy to slack off in this class. It would be great if HE was teaching my next math class. ***RECOMMENDED***

This 'professor' is out to prove to the world how smart he is and how dumb every student is. He either doesn't take a shower everyday so be prepared for some nasty BO. He wants to mold his students to his way or no way. If you don't do it his way be prepared to be selected out and stared at and graded harder than anyone else. His problem is is is use to dealing with high school students instead of college students. In high school one of the tricks to control a class used by the substandard teachers is to single someone out and ride them all quarter. He also uses the method of leaving things out so only the very bright ones get it. So, what is the use of spending two hours twice a week watching him draw pretty diagrams on the board but refusing to explain what he is doing. He says he does this so students will 'think' and not 'copy.' All it does is lose the slower untutored students behind and creates a shortage of math teachers so their jobs are secure. This guy stinks more than most math teachers. Do not take him unless you study on your own and make sure you do the problems exactly as he dictates as his is the only way.

Hey there, it's Jonnie J again. Jeff's a real piece of work. His class is very boring, but he goes through EVERY LITTLE INTRICATE detail of College Algebra. If you don't know what you're doing, he'll go back to pre-algebra and explain to you the intricacies of the equation x-5=0. Midterms are kinda challenging, and he's kind of a goof at times with his whole 'I'm just curious,' bit when he asks what everyone did for the Superbowl/X-mas.

This guy is absolutely psycho, if you want to find out how rocks relate to math in nature by all means, take his course. If you want to learn math and understand it, find someone else, he's crazy!!! If you want to talk to him outside of class be prepared for major attitude and feeling stupid. He's a total jackass. Then when he gets mad about something he looks like he's gonna cry. He's not a good teacher, maybe for basic math if he doesn't expect anything from you. But good luck!!

This is probably one of the best math teachers you will have if you take his class. He's pretty funny and teaches very well. He uses real life examples to explain things which I thought were very useful. He assigns homework, which isn't much and gives 2 midterms and a final which are very easy if you listen to his lectures. He does not allow calculators on tests because the questions are very easy. I'm sure you will enjoy his class.
