I am writing this review before I get my grade so I am not biased in any way.
I am thinking that Redona has changed in recent years. He does not do any of the things the other commenters here say he did. He does not post lecture notes online, he does not curve grades, he does not give extra credit, and he does not give practice exams.
For our class he did replace your lowest midterm grade with %40 of your final grade (which only helps if your are failing miserably), and he did give us practice questions in addition to the homework, but they were nothing like the test. In fact they were extremely misleading.
His tests were average difficulty I suppose, but his practice questions are so different from the test you have no idea what to expect. This means you have to know EVERYTHING. He even makes you derive certain formulas and theorems, but you have no idea which he will make you derive.
Homework isn't really checked by him, but he will go around to see whether you did it or not and give you a score of 1-5. Homework is only worth 20/400 points (%5) which is about as small as you can get for a Math class. It is barely worth doing for %5 other than for practice, but he assigns a LOT of problems.
In terms of his actual teaching ability I agree that he definitely knows what he's talking about and from talking to him one on one I can say he is a very nice person. However... his class, to me at least, was insufferable. He made me feel like I had ADD. I could not follow anything he was saying!
For example, I went to the final exam review just the other day and by now only half the students actually show up to class. He spent the entire class working out only 4 problems. When he works out the problems he will often only talk to himself and not address the class. Occasionally he will ask whether everyone is following, but nobody ever answers because it is a boring Math class. You have to have a little enthusiasm at least to keep people's attention in a class like this and unfortunately Redona has NO enthusiasm at all.
Overall I WISH that I could recommend Redona, but I just can't. I didn't learn one thing from him because he is just too boring. I had to learn everything on my own by reading the book and watching videos online. He is not a horrible teacher so I can give him 1 star and he is below average so I will give him 2 stars. Unfortunately I wish that I had had the same experience with him as I read others had, but unfortunately I simply can not recommend him.
Will make sure everyone unerstands
Gives study guides and practice test
Cons: Study guide and practice test do not reflect all material on midterm
Professor Redona is an awesome professor. He is very thorough with his lecture and give many examples. He will take his time and make sure everyone understands. He teaches very slow an will not rush through anything. He also gives practice tests and study guides, one thing is that you need to make sure you dont study these solely because the guide and practice test tend to be alot easier than the actual midterm. So study the homework read the book as well and you will be fine.Overall this is not a difficuy course, just stay on top of your work and visit office hrs
-homework is checked on days of the exam only and he just skims through it.
-explains things very well
Cons: People say his test are hard but that's because those people don't really try or even do the homework. I'm a math major and I'm telling you that if you study the material and understand it, then you will pass with an A or a B.
He is good. Knows his stuff. Explains it well. Easy grading rubric. You have to study if you want to pass the class. You can't expect to get an easy A in a calculus class. If you want to learn, then take him.
Grade received: B (he doesn't do pluses or minuses)
Makes it as easy as possible
Posts answers to hw online
Cons: None
He is a great teacher. He really wants the class to understand the material. There was a quiz every week but his study guide would be the same, just a few numbers changed but if you can do it on the study guide, you can do it on the quiz. Same goes with the 2 midterms and final. His project is to write an essay on a problem. Hw is due everytime there is a midterm, but don't procrastinate.
Grade:C
}His tests are thorough, but if you study the old quizzes and the "you try" problems he posts on Blackboard, you will have no trouble. He is a friendly guy and is not out to fail anyone. It's not the easiest class, but it is not hard if you put in a little effort. For an easy A take Griffith. If you can't take him Redona is good. Avoid Miller at all costs. Good luck. Grade Received: A
}Cons: Very little office hours, does not give a lot of partial credit when grading the tests, if you have a good reason then he will give you partial credit if you ask for it, no calculator, no notecards during the midterms, gives you extra credit but it is very lengthy and you get little points (and it only benefits those who have a low grade) if you want to boost your A to a higher A it won't be worth it. He teaches nice and slow at the beginning but tends to rush the last few sections.
