Cons: No partial credit on written exam.
Difficult exams.
The class has a heavy workload, but most of that will come from studying. There is a lot of material to cover in 313, so you need to self study in order to do well in the class. The midterm was 100% short answer/entries/calculations. The class average after the first midterm was approx 25%. I had a friend who got 11% and he was able to pass the class with a D. Remember, since this is the last class you need for intermediate you only need a D to graduate. I ended up with a C and I had about 36% in the midterm. Everything counts on the midterm, so study hard. The final is more of a formality. The scores tend to be so low overall, it is difficult to catch up by using the finals. Finals was all MC.
There were no surprises on the midterm. It was everything that he went through in class, but there is a lot of material. Keep in mind that he is not like Hefzi, in that his tests will look just like the HW. He teaches you the basics and expects you to apply it on a question you may/may not have seen before.
Do not fool yourself into thinking this class will be easy. As of writing this test, only Pak and Hefzi have been teaching, and they are not easy. As long as you are at the class average or above to average, you should pass with a C.
Cons: Hard tests. Since the concepts are stressed so much, the calculation practice is not always there. Lots of quizzes and if you did not do HW will not do good on quizzes.
His teaching style in 313 is different than in 311. In 311 he was all about concept and not much measurement. This class has concept, but is mainly measurement (calculations) and recognition (journal entries). The first midterm was difficult. It consisted of 6 problems with about 4-6 parts to each. What made it so difficult is that if you got step 1 wrong in the problem, the other steps would be wrong as well since they build off of the one before it. So study your calculations. The final exam was all multiple choice so there were quite a bit of calculations but they were individual instead of related to one another like the midterm. It was not as hard as the midterm because of the structure, but definitely difficult and difficult to finish in 2 hours. He drops lowest quiz score. Since a lot of students did so poorly on the midterm, he decided that if your final exam score was higher than your midterm, he would drop your midterm and count your final twice. The project is a basic research paper comparing GAAP and IFRS.
Cons: 1) He will tell you that you are not fit for an accounting position
2) You will need to study everything by yourself
3) Fall 2014 (the last quarter for curve), so he says, because no one responds to him.
4) He makes you HATE accounting.
He makes the class as hard as it is, and on his next syllabus from Winter 2015 and on, he "does not want to give curves to his students." His class consists of weekly HW, 1 MIDTERM, Group paper & presentation, WSJ (Wall street journal) writing assignment, and 1 FINAL.
He will ask the class questions to see if you are paying attention. Then, you have brave students that answers those questions with a resounding response, "NOOOOOOOOO! WRONG, Why do you not pay attention in my ACC 311 class. I taught everything. You do not remember?! Who was your Accounting Professor?! All Accounting Professors teach you guys the wrong way!!"
^ There is so much intimidation that left the whole class not wanting to respond to ANY questions he asked for the rest of the quarter...[???]
OKAY. HOW TO PASS THE CLASS. (the most important part)
1) The midterm consists of 6 problems (NO PARTIAL CREDIT) >.
- So, if you had a problem that needs the answer from the first part. You better get it right, or the WHOLE problem is wrong.
- He claims his problems are made up by himself. WRONG. Test bank problems found online.
- To pass, work on all the problems from the chapters by hand and not through connect. It will give you enough practice to understand the concept of the workout problems on the midterm.
Class Average: 25%
^Blames it on the students. (His class' averages for the past 10 years has been hovering around 20%-30%. I do not get why he ALWAYS blame it on the students. Doesn't this show that there is something peculiar about the professor and his teaching methods?)
2) FINAL
- This one was a bit tricky because no one knew what they got for their grade.
- It was 50 MC (ALL workout problems). Ahh, much better right? Multiple choice = you have a chance to get the right answer! WRONG!!! Instead of putting 4 choices, he puts an [E] just to mess with your head.
- To pass, on his review day, he will hint at you things that are important. STUDY AND WORK on those problems. Then, go through every chapter and selectively pick out the chapters you feel more comfortable, and KNOW the material.
Good Luck and I hope this review helps. (Yes, I am the same person who wrote the infamous 30+helpful review for ACC 311)
Grade Received: B
Cons: Can't Teach.
Don't know what will be on test.
He teaches you as if each student was already a CPA. He knows the material very well, but that's pointless since he is not the one taking the test. The first midterm class average was 25% and some people scored 0s. His midterm consisted of about 5 problems with 4-5 parts and he does not give partial credit. So if you missed the first part you may also miss all the other parts. To be fair, the midterm IMO was doable. In fact it was similar to the HW. However, since you do not know what to study for your brain is overloaded with information and you may make careless mistakes. The final was computation heavy. 50 problems MC. I had to guess on 7 problems since I ran out of time. If you do take him, prepare to self teach. Start very early so you don't overload your brain. Make sure you understand the material well. There are 2 projects, but they are trivial and IMO are just there to help you out. HW is done on connect and is 5% of your grade. Form a study group and go over each and every part of the book, since it is all fair game.
This class is no joke and Pak is no joke. He is the most difficult accounting professor teaching one of the most difficult classes.
He graded on a percentile system. If you are within the top 60th percentile you will pass with a C. However he was so disappointed at the results, he said he is going to add something on the syllabus, where you need to score at least a 60% overall to pass the class.
Grade Received C.
Professor Pak is a soft spoken, heavy accent, and in my opinion rude lecturer. I advise you sit near the front to hear him better, but if you are in the front he will constantly look at you and ask to participate or loudly say "You got it? Yes or No?" Which is very annoying. He basically just reads off lecture slides that he does not give out until a week before midterm and final. He gets mad if people don't participate, but if you try to answer his question and your answer wrong he would say something like "no, very bad answer" or "were you even listening?" this scares students trying to participate because of how rude he is. He isn't that organized and loses track of time very easily.
For the class the grading is like this: 30% midterm, 30% Final, 5% Homework, 10% written assignment, 5% group assignment, 20% Quizzes.
The Quizzes are purposely difficult and most of the questions are based on the reading that will be discussed before class, so you should read what will be reviewed in class before class. Also the questions are very nit picky, meaning they will be based on some small portion of the reading that most students wouldn't think about trying to memorize. No real way to study for quizzes just do your best to get above at least 5/10 on most of the quizzes and you'll be fine.
Midterm is pretty difficult but here is what I did to get an A on it. READ THE CONCEPT STATEMENTS. The midterm is mostly on concepts 8, 6, and 5. So thoroughly read those 3 statements to gain a better understanding of the way accounting work. When I say read I mean memorize every little thing and definitions because they will be on the test. After that make sure you understand how accrual and cash methods and how to adjust for each of them.
For the Final read all the required chapters and practice homework problems. No one gets higher than a C+ on this test so don't stress too much on it but just make sure you know how to do all the HW problems before going into the test.
Group and written assignments are easy just make sure you do them and you'll get full credit. If you have trouble on the Homework you should be able to use the internet and find the Chapter Solutions.
Do not go into this class with the mentality that you just need a C to pass and move on. If you do that you will fail. You have to put in a lot of time and effort to do good in this class. If you have a choice choose a different professor.

Cons: Everything
This guy is evil incarnate. he looks like a harmless nerd, but once his tests swing around you better start praying. Half of this class will be praying for a heavy curve and the other half is buying lube so it won't hurt as bad. First his accent is atrocious, i can deal with many accents, but his is the worst accent i have ever heard. It's almost impossible to understand anything he says. Second he gives homework/quizzes without letting us review them. We'd do the HW online then typically we'd be given the option to look over it to study, not with him. He gives his PowerPoint a week prior to the test which is heavily based on the PowerPoint. Third, do not bother going to office hours he'll just tell you to study more. In a moment of desperation i went to look for help at his office, i have never been so let down in my whole life. I wanted to review the quizzes with him, but at best he just lets me look at them and tells me to study more. His class is merely him reading off his powerpoints and when class ends he's the first one out the door in a jiffy. I have never met a professor that tried so hard to make students fail like him. I read the reviews and thought i can tough it out but i was wrong.
Cons: Trust me. Avoid at all cost. He makes the three class course of 311, 312, 313. So to say avoiding him is impossible.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. People have change majors because of this horrible professor. trust me. Reads the powerpoint. looks down on students. Gave lectures on why students do not study and people fail their class. Half of my class ended up failing the class not because they did not study. However, this professor gives you hw that does not relate to the test. The quizzes has nothing to do with the Exam. Lastly, his lectures does not cover anything from the exam. EVERYTHING IS SELF STUDY. He does not care about his students because he does not want to accommodate with people's schedules. You miss the quiz. it's your fault. You couldn't sign in to BB to do the hw. It's your fault. This class is just a dude talking and talking and talking and disappointing the future accounting students.
Only way to pass this class honestly is to group study and self study. Ask from students that took the class before for help.
this guy knows his stuff, but is not fit for a professor. Robotic voice that does not care about students.
Just look at his position in this website. Hes all the way to the bottom. That says a lot.
Good luck.
Best,
Lucky
has to curve greatly just so students can pass the class
Cons: very thick accent
exams are impossible to do well on
avg class scores were in the F range
knows accounting very well but does not translate that to the school setting and teach students well. expects students to think like he does and know all accounting concepts instinctively even though we have no experience in the field.
Cons: Worst teacher ever...
Unfortunately at CPP we as accounting students dont have much of a choice when it comes to choosing "professors"... if that what you even want to call what we have. Pak is by far the most arrogant, self absorbed, rude teacher i have ever taken, and i had to take him 3 times, 311, 312, 313. each time i thought "this quarter he will be nicer cause he will know 'us' more" YEAH RIGHT!!
He spent 30mins one day in class saying how he knew he had bad reviews and we thought he was the hardest grader, but that there was NOTHING anybody can do he said and i quote "i am untouchable"...Gee Thanks. so FYI if you want to complain, forget it. his tenure has gone so far up his A**he could care less if you learn or not. he goes reads some power points, asks hw questions and thats it. you would think that going to class would actually help, it doesnt. your better off staying home, saving your gas, and rereading the book like theres no tomorrow. what he write on the board..WOW...a kindergardener has better penmanship. he writes with the small point of the marker and barley puts any effort into writing so its so sloppy, and instead of erasing mistakes he just writes over them so its hard to even read wtf it says.
oh yeah and Midterms... Average grade was 30%...for 3 combined classes..
Some say he is very knowledgeable. but if that was true, a 3 class average wouldnt have been 30%...maybe 50% and thats even low for a "knowledgeable" professor.
i cant say dont take him, because he's all we have. seriously. just read the book. try to do more than just the assigned HW. and Pray.
his accent is by far the hardest thing you have to get through. i think the material is easier than understanding his accent.
Cons: Speaks very low, which doesnt help his accent. He interrupts himself mid sentence to say "ALRIGHT?" to see if you're keeping up. This completely threw me off when I was trying to focus on what he would be trying to say.
The class isnt too bad, but there is tons of reading both from the textbook and online FASB concepts which are like 30 pages each. He curves a little at the end of the course. Make sure you know your concepts for the first exam. He never specifies what to study for exam, which makes studying "everything" really suck. You kind of have to rely on being able to teach yourself, and if there is something that you just cant understand, then go to his office hours and ask, just make sure you know what exactly you're confused about because he seems impatient and irritable in his office.
I went to talk to Dr. Pak's office to speak to him a couple of times and the message that came across to me was, your grade for the midterm pretty much determines your final grade. He basically told me I was going to get a B in his class no matter what, even if i bomb the final exam. I talked to a few students after the final exam, and almost everyone seemed to feel as though they failed. His midterm class average was in the mid 60 and the final was probably in the 50. I really felt like I was guessing on every question for the final.
I would say you should try to avoid taking him at all costs. You're not going to learn much and his grading is very ambiguous. It really felt like the grading scale was arbitrary. Extremely difficult to get an A but a B seems to be doable. Grade Received: B
1)I don't think he really wants his students to do well. For example: He doesn't make an effort to have his lecture ppt files available to his students.(you have to ask from him personally)
2)His mono-tone makes the subject really "interesting."
3)He is very strict in giving you points/credits in your exams, problems, and paper. Don't be surprised that you have points here and there taken off. I guess he must have had tough teachers and professors when he was a student. So it passes to us now!
ACC 311 is the first class in the Intermediate Accounting series. If you have a bad experience with ACC 311's professor it will affect you throughout the whole series. Choose the professor wisely. (I wish I had other professor for this class).
