Pros: Hybrid class (meet only once a week)
Nice teacher
Cons: Attendance mandatory
Lectures are kind of dull but he knows what he's talking about and he's a nice professor.
Workload in this class is basically weekly readings. He splits the class into groups and for each week, he has a set of questions that your group has to answer and put on blackboard. When you split the questions between your group members, it'll be 1 or 2 questions per person, so the workload for this class isn't really much. The readings aren't difficult at all either.
Midterm & Final are online. Big suggestion is to do the test with your group members though!

Pros: He is a funny person and you do learn in this class.
Cons: His lectures are little boring but people show up because of the attendance. (ITS NOT BAD THOUGH)
Review as of Fall 2014This class was easy, about 1-3 Questions a week. No quizzes. No essay.
25% Midterm 1, 25% Midterm 2, 25% Attendance, 25% Discussion Questions(Homework).
Only needed to show up to class once a week it was a hybrid online class. You need two books one is Takaki’s and one he wrote on his own. Midterms are online multiple choice 50 questions. Not hard to get an A in this class as long as you read and if you don’t it’s a very easy B. His midterm questions are mostly from his lecture so no worries.
A very good class to take if you have a busy schedule this is more like a relaxing class! Highly recommended! Grade Received: A

Pros: Passionate about what he is teaching
Lectures are online
Very Lenient on late hw assignments
Group Work
Cons: Can be boring
Random Oral Pop Quizzes based on the reading
Lots of Group Work
Professor Liu is a really nice man, but his lectures can be pretty dull and boring. As long as you do the assigned readings then it's pretty easy to follow along with. His class is a hybrid-class so you only have to be at school once a week for his class and he is pretty lenient on submitting late hw assignments and gives you multiple opportunities to make-up for missed hw assignments. His class is also pretty laid-back and is one of those classes you take when you have a lot of other hardcore classes.
CLASS-The class is all points-based so every point for attendance and online discussion matters if you're bad at taking tests. He assigns you to a group and the group works together to answer these weekly questions, so you only have to answer one or two questions a week to get the discussion points.
TESTS- All the test are online and you have one hour to work on 50 questions. During Test, he even ENCOURAGES to use his lecture notes online and to work in groups, but every person gets the same question but in a different order. He gives out a study guide before the midterm and final and if you're able to answer the questions on the study guide then you should be fine for the tests.
BOOKS- You have to get two books for this class- Strangers from A Different Shore by Ronald Takaki and his book Transnational History of a Chinese Family. Takaki's book is actually really interesting near the beginning but gets really redundant near the end and his book (unfortunately) is extremely boring. The book you would mainly want to concentrate on is Takaki's book because his tests are mostly based off of them but you also want to make sure you've read his book because there are a few questions on his book.
Overall the class is a really easy A as long as you do the online discussions, GO TO CLASS, and read the books. Not much work is really needed for this class since you have a whole week to read two chapters and answer 1-3 Questions a week.

Pros: Exams are online.
Highlights main points that will show up on exams.
Exams are open book and can be done in groups.
Knowledgeable about Chinese culture and Chinese Americans.
Laptops are a way to pass time.
We only show up once per week.
Cons: Some content are detailed which also show up on exams.
His accent can be distracting to non Chinese speakers.
Dr. Liu is passionate about Chinese American issues. He even knows history of China and other issues in East Asia. Not just China, but also Korea, Japan, Philippines and other Asian countries. It's sad that he had take a leave of absence because of family issues back in China. He had to look after his wife after Winter Quarter 2012. If you're a Chinese speaker, you'll be able to understand what's he saying. If you're not a Chinese speaker, then going through the lectures will be hard. Another worst part is that he'll assign a paper to whoever didn't follow directions on homework assignments. I definitely recommend Dr. Liu for every Asian at Cal Poly. It counts as a GE. You'll learn about contemporary Asian culture. Grade received: A. Both from EWS 204 & 301.

Pros: Easy class and learn lots of Chinese Americans/Immigrants
Cons: His tone can put you to sleep
Class consisted of a online midterm and final. There are online discussions where you basically just answer questions split between your group. RECOMMEND taking your midterm/final with your group. Paper assignment was given to slackers who didn't do the online discussions. Attendence points count toward 20-25% of your grade, he takes role at the end of class.

Liu's voice can get pretty monotone but surprisingly he would at least have the class laughing every now and then. It's a hybrid class so we only go in once a week. At the end of each week there are group questions to be answered on blackboard that are pretty easy as long as you listen to the lecture or read the book. If your group members don't answer their assigned questions, that doesn't affect you. There are 2 midterms no final. One of his required books is actually interesting but the other one that he wrote himself can get boring. It's important to read both for the midterms. Grade Received B+

Pros: Hybrid class, lectures mirror the notes and the books, exams were all online
Cons: Exams were extremely detailed, some details were not present in lectures, notes, or books.
Over all, an interesting class, learned a lot about early Chinese Immigrant Life. Found the books very interesting. Class was technically once a week and long in duration, really helped to bring snacks in order to keep yourself awake. Professor Liu was actually fun to talk to, and sometimes actually funny, he has a nice sense of humor. He would give very good answers when asked questions, he likes it when people ask questions, consider those good class karma points. Make sure you answer All of the assigned reading questions, and actually give good answers that are more than 3 sentences (complete sentences) if you do, chances are very good that you won't have to write the final Paper as punishment for being a slacker.

Pros: Easy A class
He used blackboard for posting homework.
Cons: It may be boring
He has an accent that maybe very hard to understand
He seems slow at times
This class is a very easy A class as long as you do the weekly homework and attend the boring lectures because his exam is based off lectures. The class gets really boring sometimes, but I always bring my laptop to entertain me. He also takes attendance, so its important to attend class.Exams are online, and its moderately easy. There is 2 books that will be used to do the homework and reading. Overall, it's a very easy class.

Pros: His homework assignments are easy to do and does not require a whole lot of time to do them. He's a really interesting character and despite his accent, he's really easy to listen to and to absorb information from.
Cons: There isn't much that I can say here except maybe that his accent gets in the way sometimes. What I mean by this is that some information may be misinterpreted should you be spacing out and prioritizing Facebook over him. Just pay attention and things should go just fine.
This professor is fair. He is a human with real human emotions. If you have something going on in your life and can't do his work in time, he is willing to work with you. I personally like him because despite his rugged teaching method, he is a kind and intelligent man. His lectures are a bit boring but taking notes is explicitly recommended because his midterms and finals are based on the lectures that he gives. In addition to taking notes in class, keeping up with the reading assignment will boast a huge benefit to your grade in this class because sometimes he puts stuff that you should've read in the reading assignments into his midterms and final. All in all, awesome teacher. Grade Received: A.

This class was more challenging than I expected. His midterms were pretty hard since most people got C's. Make sure you study for those and pay attention in class. Although, his class was freaking boring, almost everyone was asleep, doing something else, or playing on their laptops. He requires a weekly group discussion on blackboard which is easy since all you do is post your share of the work and leave. The term paper was alright, he gives you 48 hours to work on it. Overall, he's a pretty good professor, sometimes he can be funny, and I would recommend him if you are looking to take EWS 204. Grade Received: B+

He made us read two books. One of them is his own, which is harder and more boring to read than the one that isn't. The other book was actually interesting, but it was pretty long and got boring near the end. He teaches by lecturing off his notes available on Blackboard. It's extremely boring and honestly barely helpful. He's really quiet and monotonous. Also, if you're not used to his accent, it might be distracting. Pretty much everyone goes to class only because attendance counts toward your grade. We were put into groups by alphabetical order for online discussion. For online discussion, your group divides up the weekly questions to answer on online class days, which isn't too difficult unless your group sucks. There is also a research paper due at the end of the quarter; you can do it alone or with your group. If you take the class during spring quarter, he'll offer an alternative of volunteering for about 10 hrs with Asian American month activities on campus. There are two exams and no final. The questions on the exams are horrible. Some of them are really detailed and irrelevant, like exactly how many children did so-and-so bring to America that were actually hers? You only get 1 hr to do the exams, so you better be prepared because you'll probably spend a lot of time looking up answers to weird super detailed questions. If you have a laptop, you should bring it to class to use to pass the time. Grade Received: B

This class is not too demanding (attendance, group discussion, 2 tests and group paper) since it is a hybrid class (met tues/ blackboard thurs). I didn't like the fact that the class was alphabetically split into groups. It was frustrating because I got stuck with ppl who didn't care about the class which put more work on those who actually wanted to get an A. Lectures are boring but take notes because they do help on the online discussion and sort of the tests. You need to read the books or take the online tests (50 Qs) together to get an A. He curves the grade. Grade Received: A-

A VERY easy class; his lectures can be a little dry, but they can also be interesting. Having done a very comprehensive report about the Nanjing incident in the prior quarter, I noticed through his lectures that he does tend to focus on the only the worst side of the historical spectrum, which might be a bit sensationalized in reality (Not to say that Nanjing wasn't an attrocity whatever the real magnitude might be). This was a hybrid class, participation was graded, we really didn't have any homework, but there was a Blackboard midterm and final (Prepare your google and Answers.com windows and have his book handy and you'll do fine). I got an A on the project, full participation credit, and a high B on both tests but still had a solid A. Easy and informative, I would reccomend it. Grade Received: A

Basic outline: One two-hour lecture every week, one online discussion every week. Two midterms and a paper.
}The lectures are very boring. I've never really listened in class. The online discussion is basically where students answer questions that he posts online. As long as you have the effort, he'll give you points, regardless of whether it is right or not. He takes attendance at the end of his lectures.
}The midterms are online...so yeah, but you are limited to time (1 hour to do 50 problems).
}He does give a review sheet for both midterms in the beginning so there shouldn't be any problems on the midterm.
}The paper was annoying though. You have a choice of doing an individual essay or group essay. I would choose individual unless you can easily meet with your group and divide the responsibilities well.
}Overall: A fine class. Grade Received: A-

Amazing teacher, possesses incredible knowledge of asian history in the united states. He's the kind of teacher that lives to teach and to educate students as best as he can not just only for his class but for life. He's very kind and wise and is always willing to help a student out. Just do all of your work, attend class everyday, and reply to all the questions on blackboard and you should do fine. Many students take this class thinking it's going to be a piece of cake, but i can tell you now, if you're gonna half ass the class then you might as well drop out. The most challenging part of the class is being divided into groups to do your group paper. I got a couple flakes in my group which really handicapped the group paper but i managed to pull through and do excellent in the class. Trust me, Dr. Liu is a class A scholar and thank cal poly for having such a wonderful professor. Grade Received: A

Dr. Liu lectures every class period. Its very very BORING!!! We have to read two very long books. There are two exams. A midterm and a final, he calls them test 1 and test 2 though. There is a group presentation on a topic regarding his book. There is also an essay on an immigration experience or a culture identity topic of your choice. Personally i thought the exams were hard. There were tricky questions and some of them came from his lectures. You just have to read his book thoroughly and take notes when he lectures. Its very boring. i really don't reccommend this class. avoid it if you can. Grade Received: B+

To many, Dr. Liu is an easy teacher. Personally, I thought his exams were hard. The midterm and final both make up 50% of your grade(25% each). Even though he uses only scantrons and you don't have to write any essay, the questions are still difficult. In order to do really well, you would have to fully and thoroughly read the book that he assigns. The other 50% of your grade is made up of group discussions, a final paper, group project, etc. all of which he grades relatively easily. Although Dr. Liu may not seem that approachable at first, once he gets to know you, he's actually pretty friendly.

Liu is a very nice guy. He talks kind of soft, and people claim that he has a chinglish accent. However, i don't really notice it cuz i am asian. haha. But i really dont think its hard to understand him. And its not like it matters because you can just study from the book.. he tells you what he will test you on.. so its not so bad. Personally, i think his class is only suits people who are actually interested in the class. If you aren't interested the class may be really boring. There is a group project that you have to do and present to the class. Its a good way to earn points and raise your grade if you don't do well in the class. The project doesn't take up that much time either, because you get time to work on them like every week during class. Oh and theres also a paper you have to do, which is like 6 or 8 pgs.. something like that double space. But its simple, you can just write about your own family or friend's family background...kinda like writing biography. Like i said, i think the class is easy if you are interested. He's easy to talk to. I will probably take his class again.. he has a similar class ews404.

Pretty easy class. There's a really long book to read, but sometimes it can get interesting. His lectures are pretty boring...and I was falling asleep almost every class meeting. He assigns 2 papers and weekly chapter summaries (pretty easy) He gives one midterm - which was kind of bad b/c it wasn't too hard, but easy to mess up on if you forget a few facts. One paper is on some kind of asian tradition i think ... I can't remember. But the last one is on immigration where you need to interview and write about the experiences of that immigrant. Easy stuff. Got a B+ in that class
