Dr. Bliss is by far my most favorite teacher...ever! She is always willing to help each and every student. She gives you the categories for the speeches and lets you talk about whatever you want. I got a B+ and two A's on my speeches. As long as you make eye contact, have good posture, and don't, I repeat don't stare at the ceiling when you give your speech, you'll be fine. She has three quizzes, all multiple choice of T/F 10 questions, and as long as you read the book you'll be fine. The final is 50 questions and it took the class no more than 20 minutes. She doesn't have you come during finals week since the final is never that long. All in all I absolutely loved this class, and I HATE HATE HATE speaking in front of people. Dr. Bliss made the environment so enjoyable and easy to talk to. You make friends no matter what in this class. Take the class with her!

Pros: 1. Dr. Bliss is so positive, happy, and friendly!
2. Only 3 speeches, very simple straight forward.
3. You can't fail her class, as long as you do the work and the speeches you will get a C!
4. Daily Activities
5. More details below!
Cons: None!
She is very clear on instructions. She makes the class as relaxing as possible, and you will make friends in this class because the activities will give you new friends! After your speech, she always gives positive feedback and not to put anyone down!
She is hard on giving A's on the speeches, you must be exception and fit her tips perfectly (I didn't practice too much and got high B's, which is fair) Other than that her class is about a free B if you give moderator to little effort, and a free C if you dont try at all (but still do the work) you will have to put maximum effort for an A
She does give 3 quizzes, if you read the book you will be fine, but the book is BORING... I never read so whatever at least I passed two of them..
Grading: 100 Attendance, 100 Participation, 100 quizzes(3), 100 Informative, 200 Persuasive, 200 Commemorative 100 Critique, 100 final = total 1000 points
I heard other COM professors give 5 speeches and criticizes the speaker! Dr. Bliss is NOT like that!!! DEFINITELY TAKE DR. BLISS
Grade Received: Probably a B/B+

She is the sweetest teacher I've taken so far! Her class is fairly easy and she makes it fun by having us do little activities around the classroom to make it interesting. There are 3 main speeches, which your grade will mostly be based on. Make sure you hit that 5 minute mark because that is the only thing that can really bring you down. Don't be nervous, because when you do, you start talking fast, and start saying um, and like, and that's what she is counting! Just relax when you get up there, and you should be fine. If you're worried just talk to her, she's a real sweety!

Pros: Very nice and helpful.
Fair grader.
Easy quizzes
Cons: none
First of all. DO NOT buy both books for the class. I bought both only to find we only used one. Just buy the DK book.
Dr. Bliss is a very nice lady. You can tell she is very passionate about the subject. She really encourages the class to participate with her. There are no real lectures. the learning process consists of group activities almost every meeting. You WILL make friends in this class because of all the group activities.
class consists of 3 quizzes and a final which are fairly easy, just memorizing vocabulary. She will give you a study guide for the final that has EVERYTHING you need to know for the final.
you need to make 3 five-minute speeches in the class, which are easy. If you need help, she will help you construct your speech with you and give you lots of ideas.
Excellent professor. Take her if you can

Dr. Bliss is the nicest person ever. She is extremely caring and a very outgoing person. She is a fun person to listen to when she lectures and will always give you examples to help you better understand. Class is never boring and she tries to make the speeches fun. The class consisted of 3 speeches. The goal is to make it at least 5 minutes and add humor into it. Her final was extremely easy thanks to the study guide that she provides! Make sure you do the study guide!

I highly recommedn this professor!!! She is funny and has a wonderful way of getting everyone to participate and actually enjoy it! Her methods are unusual but fun to do. There were only two homework assignments which were easy but include alot of detail if you expect to get higher than a C. There are three speeches (informative, persuasive, commemorative). However don't expect an A on your speech if all you do is read off your paper or notecards. The exam is easy only if you THOROUGHLY do the studyguide otherwise every question will seem the same. You only really need the book for the two hmwk assignments, the studyguide, and occasional inclass assignments(these don't have to be turned in and she won't dock points for not having book). I would share a book. Overall she is easy to talk to and will assist you with anything you need. One of the few who really cares about you, your opinion, and success!

Pros: NO midterm and the final was straight forward.
Cons: none
The class is easy, and Bliss is a great professor. She keeps things interesting and she has a great attitude. Most of the class is spent doing group assignments which helped me alot, because it kept me paying attention and learning the concepts. There are some homework assignments but they aren't hard, just read the chapter and write what you learned and how it relates to you. I enjoyed the class, got a B.

The best teacher that I have had yet at Cal Poly Pomona! I would take her again in a heartbeat. She is funny, a great teacher, and overall very understanding and cool. Does not grade too hard as long as you actually put some effort in. Some writing homework on some chapters, a small group project, hip clips, final and done. Just come to class and participate and you will get a lot out of it. Grade Received: A

I took this course in fall 2009 as a freshman. She is a really great teacher. She is clear with her instructions with everything you do in class and homework assignments. She understands that people who take the class are most likely not that confident in their public speaking skills, and they would like to improve on it that's why they're taking the class. She makes the everyone comfortable with each other to be able to publicly speak. She didn't assign any reading assignments or homework with all the furlough days. The only things you have to prepare for are the 3 short 3-5 min speeches. Then she basically gives you the questions to the final as a review sheet in class and you work on it with other people and take it home to study. She is the most friendly teacher and is always available to help, definitely a great teacher personality especially for this class. Grade Received: B

If you are scared of taking a public speaking class...this is the perfect class to take. Professor Bliss is a super easy teacher. You only have to worry about 3 short and easy speeches (5min max). No homework, no midterms, only a short multiple choice final. She is very funny, cool, and outgoing. I highly recommend this teacher if you want to get public speaking out of your way with a good grade. Grade Received: B

Dr. Bliss is a strange teacher. She is very nice, and it is very easy to get a "B" in her class. However, it is nigh impossible to get anything better. I only ever got one "A" on something from her class, and that was because I wrote one of the best essays of my college career. She's a fun, low-stress teacher. If you don't mind her bringing down your GPA (assuming it's higher than 3.0), then take her.

Professor Bliss is one of the most knowledgeable COM professors when it comes to the entertainment industry. Besides teaching, she used to work for a couple major production studios and knows tons of people in LA. Almost every class, she lectures for about an hour and then makes us get into groups for a small project or exercise. Her class primarily consists of busy work that doesn't take very long to complete. For homework you write a chapter summary and write down 5 important things that were mentioned in the chapter. Also her group/individual topics are really easy too. The individual project she made us do was to find something in mass media that has a huge impact in our lives and give a 3-5 minute speech. The group project is to research a topic from the book that relates to mass media. She'll give you the topics to cover. Overall, her class was interesting and she has tons of cool stories about Hollywood that she'll tell during class. Grade Received: C+

Professor Bliss has got to be one of the best professors I've ever had in CPP. As the first day goes in a COM class, everyone is shy to speak outloud. but she made it soooo easy for us! She really helps you out a lot, and encourages you to the max. She makes you feel at ease when you're nervous for the first speech. Everyone did really well. She has a few games prepared for us in each class, and goes over the study guide on the last two days of school. She's always so energetic and never made the class boring. You've got to take her class. I was very shy and nervous to speak in front of many people, but her class has taught me how to get over it. Sure, i'm still not a pro at public speaking, but I have learned to become a better speaker. TAKE HER. YOU WON'T REGRET!!! o and she takes a class pic. at the end of the quarter haha =D

GREAT PROFESSOR! Dr. Bliss is so much fun! I put this class of for FOUR years (yup, I'm a Senior). I've given many presentations before, given that I am in the Bio Sci Dept, so fear was not my big thing. Apparently, most people are more afraid to speak in public than to die. Go figure.
}She is upbeat and makes class so much fun. Three EASY homeworks, 3 EASY speeches, and a final that was a total joke. It was wayyyyyy too easy! She gives a study guide and tells you "this is pretty much your final". If you know the whole study guide (which she goes over in class), then you will get an A.
}Overall, very fun class and I'm sorry I put this off for soooo long. She is a great person and like a friend to her students. Really cares about you and wants you to do well not only in her class, but in LIFE. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Dr. Bliss! Grade Received: A

She's a great professor. She's genuinely nice. She gets you involved when you really dont wanna be, but it's for the sake of losing nervousness when you are giving your speeches. She makes you become comfortable with classmates and she clearly explains how she would like the speeches to be. Waay easier than other COM professors. Watch out for her final tho, it'll kick your ass if you dont study.

The syllabus is 3 speeches (50% of your grade) of doing an informative, commemorative, and persuasive speech. Then 10% homework, 10% attendance, 20% multiple choice final, and a typed critique worth 10%. She is a very nice teacher (otherwise known as Dr. Bliss) an understands how speaking for students can be frightening. She grades at a moderate-easy level when speaking. A tip would be to talk LOUD and confident with a credible speech and you'll at least get a B. Homework assignments were only 3 in the quarter which can be easily done. The final is multiple choice an most of it is on review you do in class. Another tip would be to use humor in doing a speech, my friend did that and he got a better grade than me compared to doing a serious speech. Overall, this teacher is RECOMMENDED since shes VERY nice, gives only 3 homework assignements, and if you really try on the speech you will get an A but if you at least make some attempt then you'll get a C. She is a very good teacher. At the first half of the quarter, all we did is to scan some chapters, then the second half of the quarter, we prepare 3 speeches, which only makes up 14-15 min of speech altogether. She feels very compassate about her subject, and sometimes she applies what she teaches to things in our daily life. Before the finals, we have a study guide which the questions are almost same as the ones on the final. No midterm. As long as you prepare your speech and review the study guide for the finals, you are in good shape. Therefore, I highly recommand to take her class. Grade Received: B+

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND TAKING DR. BLISS! She is very enthusiastic about her subject, and will go off on personal stories about her past jobs in the mass media business. She gives a worksheet with the exact questions on the final. You look up the answers in the book, then go over them in class before the final. Don't bother taking notes, either. There is one group project you have to do on one type of mass media. As well as an individual presentation of your favorite type of media... I showed a clip from my favorite movie. Easy class, sweet teacher... easy A!!! Grade Received: A

Dr. Bliss is seriously a really good teacher to take if you're really into discussions. She is incredibly reasonable with the work. There is no homework but a group project that you split up amongst your group members on a topic that deals with the media. There's also a 21 page journal thats due close to the end. BUT you get to talk about basically ANYTHING that has to do with the media and you can get it done SO FAST! (ex: In one journal entry, I talked about the issues about how Britney Spears dresses really scandalous when more then half of her fans are still in elementry school.) The one test she has is the final and she goes over that with you. She basically gives out a handout that covers all the things you need to know on the final. Dr. Bliss is always so enthusiastic! She's really passionate about what she teaches and we obviously need more teachers like that on our campus. Attendance/ participation is really important in her class so make sure you're there in class ready to participate in the class discussions and SPEAK UP! I really recommend this class with her!!
