The way this course was set up encourages students to take the reins in the discussion, which was where I faltered. We were required to write a question for each short story in the collection we were reading, which she then compiled from 15 of us, and we discussed the work in class. Thisbe is a great moderator and will work with you if you need her.
If you're looking for a class to build your skill, I would take a different Professor. We were only allowed to write one page, double-spaced stories all semester long and the only thing I learned was that I dislike flash fiction. Thisbe is an amazing person but the class was not useful whatsoever. Only realistic fiction and nothing else.
The teacher has specific guidelines for everything. Tons of busywork. Peer critiques must be typed and are graded. Grading style overall rigid. The teacher offers little help outside of class.
I had some stories ready in anticipation for the creative writing workshop class but Thisbe only lets you turn in things she assigned with her writing prompts and page limit. If you're looking to workshop your actual material, then probably should take another professor Other professors will let you workshop your actual writing.
Thisbe is amazing. She's always willing to sit down with you to talk about your work. Thisbe always writes extensive notes on your stories that are helpful. She works hard to make sure her class is enjoyable, and she's funny. If you're a Creative Writing major or minor, definitely take one of her classes.
Thisbe was great and the class was as fulfilling as you wanted it to be. It is, after all, advanced fiction. Your experience and grades are going to be subjective. I highly recommend working with such a knowledgeable, published writer. |
