 I sincerely advise you to pick another guitar program. Steve, in my opinion, really is the weak link in the UNC jazz faculty. His job consists of performances, recording sessions, traveling for the school, etc. and teaching seems like it's somewhere near the bottom of his list. You’ll get along with Steve if you’re willing to stroke his ego a little, and talk about John Schofield and Pat Metheny as if they’re incarnations of Jesus Christ. We went to his show, and left after about an hour. For the rest of the semester, Steve acted like we’d snubbed him…as if his playing is so great that we’d sit there for three hours just to listen to him. Give me a break - you ain’t that good Steve. I deeply regret paying tuition at UNC, and studying with Steve Kovalcheck. I transferred out as soon as I could. I really hope this review can save others from the same experience.

 This guy seemed like he was overworked, and spread way too thin. Instead of answering my questions, he would just say that everything I need is on the recording. I later asked for picking-speed exercises, and he didn't know any. The school's website said that Steve leads the guitar ensemble. The semester I was there it was led by a first-semester master's student, and Steve showed up to rehearsal a total of one time...He seemed like a nice guy, but was often pretty rude. Steve described himself as a coach to help me through my own improvement process - after one semester with him though, that kinda seems like it's just an excuse to not have to teach. I would not recommend studying with this guy.
