Cons: She does have an accent but if you sit close and giver her your undivided attention it should not be a problem- at least it was not for me.
This is not an easy class. To get a good grade you MUST be present for every lecture and pay attention. Missing one day is like missing a year. She does not use the book so you solely rely on her lecture notes- hence don't miss class. However she will work with you to get your grade up and is extremely kind and patient when explaining difficult problems that you may not fully comprehend. I highly recommend her.
No book required for lab or lecture
Cons: Scattered and unorganized. You never know where you stand in her class grade wise.
Dr. Toghraie is a decent professor. She is EXTREMELY smart in the subject, and can answer any question you have. She is a bit snotty, which can be off-putting, but if you can ever track her down she's not so bad. She is very hard to reach. She literally runs out of class after she is finished.
There were 7 exams and no final. The first 2 exams were pretty easy...mostly review. The rest of the exams are open notes and one take home group test. Don't be fooled by this....they are horrible!! She does however offer tons of extra credit. On the outside it seems insane not to have an A in her class because of the take home/open notes tests, quizzes and extra credit, but her exams are very difficult. You really need to know what you're doing, or you will not pass. THIS IS [fake] ORGANIC CHEMISTRY!
Lab is a joke.
No lab book or lexture book
Cons: She goes through the material really fast. It can be easy to miss something that shows up on the test.
It can take a bit of effort to adapt to her teaching. Most of the time, she moves so fast I can't really formulate a question until after I have had time to go over the material again at home. Once class is done, she is OUT OF THERE! At first I thought she was unapproachable because of this, but that wasn't the truth. If you need or want some extra help, she is VERY approachable. I would definitely recommend her, but don't expect to be lazy! Also, do yourself a favor and get an audio recorder!!!
Cons: Doesn't use D2L, Doesn't answer email, Read comments below
I want to state at the beginning of this review that I received an A in the course, so my final grade did not influence my review. I also feel bad writing this review because I've never written a bad review, but I felt compelled to write the review I wish I'd read prior to taking her. She is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She is obviously a smart woman, and very capable, but she doesn't seem to take much pride in her job and isn't accountable at all.
At the beginning of the semester she went really slow, explaining the basics we'd already learned in previous classes. She also assigned homework for bonus points and the test were challenging, but fair (1st 3 tests). She had me thinking "wow she's a great professor". But by November she did a 180. She began flying through new material so fast I could barely write it down, stopped following the book, and essentially crippled my ability to learn the material . The examples she'd give were much easier than she would put on the tests. She'd use catalysts on the exam that none of us had ever seen in lecture, examples, quizzes, book, or online. Also, by this time homework bonuses were no longer being assigned. The remaining 4 tests consisted of (1) "on the board", get one question & get it right = 100%, (1) incredibly hard take-home test that contained some material we'd yet to cover, and (2) very hard "open note" tests. She ended up adding 20 point to the take-home and dropping the lowest test score because everyone did so poorly on the 2nd to last test.
In short, she masks her poor teaching (or drive) by padding the class average with bonus points, dropped exams, and grade-it-yourself "quizzes". Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have gotten an A, but I honestly learned very little. It can be very frustrating feeling lost for the majority of the semester, and there being very little you can do about it. Glad to have this one behind me⦠good luck!
Cons: She doesn't use powerpoint and hand writes everything on the board, so you have to quickly write everything down in class instead of being able to listen and just make side notes for further understanding. The only grades you get for this course are through tests besides the little that the lab portion counts.
She teaches out of sequence with the labs, so you don't understand anything you're doing in the labs unless you read ahead in the textbook and are able to understand it all. She basically tells you the answer and doesn't explain why or the full concept behind what she's teaching so that you can do the problems on your own. Besides the first couple of weeks, I felt lost when it came to labs because we were so behind the other lecture classes and I feel she doesn't explain things as well as the other professors. If you want to learn the least amount possible in Organic I, then take her, but if you actually want to be prepared for Organic II... take someone else!!
Exams: Sometimes when you would ask a TA/professor a question, they would just look at the answer you came up with and say, "Yeah that's right." and when you got your assignment back it would be marked wrong and no one could answer as to why it was wrong or why the TA/professor would tell me that previously he/she said it was correct.
Homework: You need to read over the lab before the class because the quizzes were over what you were going to cover that day in class.
Textbook: The lab book was made by Dr. Melton who is an awesome Chem professor. She teaches the lecture part of this lab.
Exams: She would normally give a curve.
Homework: Homework was given every now and then.. I would do the homework because she will take it up for extra credit
Exams: There was a test every other week which sounds like a lot but its less material covered on each test so its easier to learn the material for each test.
Homework: Every now and then she would give homework questions or classwork questions but you do not have to do them its all just for extra credit toward the next test.
Textbook: She recommends that you buy the textbook but her notes are plenty to pass the tests.
Exams: She ALWAYS gives you extra credit. The only way you can fail this class is if you do not care, or never study. I always studied the night before the test and made 100s on everything. She would ask you the class before a couple questions, and if you get them right she gives you points on the test. She tests strictly from the notes.
Homework: we only had to study for tests and we had one assignment that we had a week to do. and turn it in for 35 points.
Textbook: DO NOT BUY IT if you have her. She DID not use it once and i wasted my money. She never tests out of the book, ONLY from her notes.
Exams: We had five tests. They were difficult however she let us use open notes on three of them.
Homework: Very little homework and it is always extra credit.
Textbook: She told us we did not need the book. I did not purchase it. I studied strictly from my notes.
Exams: The test were very difficult to study for because the notes she gave in class were too simple.
Homework: No homework, but to excell in this class you should really do the problems at the end of the chapters.
Textbook: The textbook was pretty good. The end of chapter review questions help you to solidify the concepts.
Exams: Her tests were exactly what we took notes on in class. Sometimes she would word questions in a wierd way that made it hard to understand because it wasn't the way she worded it in class.
Homework: We had a 7 day nuitrition diary that was due at the end of the semester. The only other homework other than that was some problems she wrote on the board for extra credit.
Textbook: The textbook really helped in her class especially when she let you use it for open book/note quizzes for extra credit. She always put atleast one or two questions that she never taught in class that only came from the book on her tests.
Exams: They are sometimes difficult, but there is a ton of extra credit available for each test. I got as much as 30 points on one test. Sometimes, if you answered questions in class, you were allowed a 100 on the test anyways.
Homework: None
Exams: from what i can remember, she would give partial credit if you were on the right track in the beginning, i.e. remembered the equation. obviously, though, if your math was wrong, you didn't get full credit. the tests were pretty simple, as long as you study the night before and remember any of the equations from high school physics or physical science. sometimes she even gave a cheat sheet listing the equations. the rest of the test was short answer, i believe, over various facts from the book or lecture. pretty easy, really, if you study the notes.
Homework: i think we had to complete some end of chapter questions, but if you are at all unsure of your ability to complete the problems with your notes in front of you, you may not fair well on the test.
Textbook: pretty boring, but it's physical science, and for the most part, this subject is not my favorite. i think it was pretty expensive, though, and since this is a widely taken class, find a friend and share or borrow.
Exams: Most of the test were straight forward but that did not mean they were easy at all. You really need to study but Dr. Tograhie gave lots of extra credit so that helped out quite a bit!!
Homework: She assigned homework but it was not time consuming at all and it was always for extra credit so it benefited you a great deal to do the homework!!
Textbook: I believe I opened my textbook twice. Her notes are plenty! You can use your neighbors if you have to.
Exams: There were 5 tests including the final (not comprehensive). Each test was covered between 2 chapters. Tests were problem solved questionâ¦.she would give a question and we had to solve it. If you study her notes, do the problem in between the chapters and do the problems at end of the chapter you will go good on the test. One of your test problems came from straight from between the chapters. So, DO THEM ALL!! And she always had 1 question on the test, worth 10 extra credits.
Homework: She would give us homework once in a while, which were worth as extra credit
Textbook: It was helpful with the course !
Exams: The tests were hard for those who didnt study. Its easy not to study and then when you fail blame the professor. If you paid attention in class ( which my class didnt) and studied your notes, then you did fine.
Homework: Very little homework and classwork, but when she did it was extra credit.
Textbook: Textbook was used as a reference. She made it easier to understand as she knows her stuff inside and out.
Exams: She gave very hard tests!! The first test average was a 73. My best test grade was an 86..that's normally my lowest!!
Homework: She gave very little homework and what she did give it was 10 points extra credit. All you're graded on is tests, and you better hope your a genius to pass them.
Textbook: You have to get the book b/c she is very hard to understand. Do you think with a name like that you can speak good english?!
