I also took beginning Italian from Max when he taught at Duke. I learned Italian but what sticks with me is his clarity, forthrightness and earnestness. He is one of my favorite professors and one who changed my life the most. | |
I took intensive beginner's Italian from Mr. Creech when he was a professor at Duke University. I'm really glad for the conversations we had in the class, which helped strengthen my skills and my confidence with TRYING to speak Italian. I'm also thankful that we got to talk at length outside of class... while I was one of the students in the class that was struggling the most to keep up, he still was able to instill in me a passion to keep my studies going -- including living and studying the language in Italy itself. Part of what made him so convincing was that he shared with me his story of getting into learning foreign languages, including how it helped him meet his partner at the time (I believe she was a professor of French). Luckily for me I did IN FACT have a terrific experience studying Italian abroad (both in Perugia during the summer and in Sesto Fiorentino, a suburb of Florence, during the fall). In fact, I might have to thank him with helping me eventually meet my future wife. You see, because I had such a great time studying Italian, I also chose after I got my undergrad to try living and working in Switerzland for a year -- including studying German the summer prior at Duke. I met my lovely east-German wife -- meine liebe Oest-deutcherin =) -- while in Basel. If you're at all interested in learning Italian, I can say that Mr. Creech stands a good chance of helping you start on your journey! - Matthew, Duke Engineering '04 |
