I was at Manchester back in 2008 so it's been awhile since I was in Professor Bryant's Analytical Chem class, but I recently had a memory pop up that I felt like I should share regarding the kindness and care he has for his students. I was a good student and was about halfway through the semester when I found out my mom had been diagnosed with a serious cancer a few nights before our analytical chem exam. I couldn't focus but hadn't fully processed the news so I took the exam without saying anything and absolutely bombed it. I was resigned to my fate at that point and was kind of moving in slow motion. After the grades posted, Professor Bryant sent me an email asking if I could swing by his office hours. I stopped by as requested and he kindly asked me if something was going on outside of school as my grades had been excellent and all of a sudden I had failed a test with less than a 50%. With the news of the diagnosis still less than a week old, I just started sobbing and told him what had happened. He luckily had a box of tissues nearby and just sat and listened until I had gotten everything out. At the end of my story he didn't even hesitate but asked me how much time I needed to cope with the news and study to retake the test. I told him I could probably pull it together in a week. I retook the test and got my normal score. There was no average or penalty, he simply took the new score as if it was my first attempt. I don't think at the time I really appreciated this act as much as I should have. Looking back he truly went out of his way to be compassionate and make sure I had what I needed to succeed. It's nice to have a professor that understands that life sometimes gets in the way of things like tests and school. I'll never forget that kindness and just wanted to say thank you again (even though it's 10+ years later). If you get Professor Bryant on your schedule, you'll be a better student for it!
