Best professors I've ever had!
Professor Markus' class isn't easy, but he tries his best to make sure everyone understands the material before moving on. At the beginning of each class, he does a 30+ minute review session on all the material he taught the class before. By the time you study for the exams, you heard the material at least twice. Markus also really wants people to do well. On each exam, there are about 10 bonus points you can be awarded, and he scales the exams in a way that helps the students the most. In our class, the exams were supposed to be worth 30% then the last two 35%, but since most students didn't do as well on the second exam, he made it so that the better exam score was worth 40% and the worse one 25%. You definitely need to study for this class, but if you do, you'll do fine. I ended up only needing a D on the final to get an A in this course due to all the extra credit on the exams. Definitely taking learning with Markus!

Worst professors I've ever had!
Listen to the negative comments. I wish I did. They are more accurate about Markus' teaching style. He is disorgranized, he is nonchalant when a struggling student comes to him for help, and he grades unfairly. For each exam, he had four different versions! What is worst is that he averages all the exams together. So if the class' average on the whole is a 73, he would see no need for a curve; however, he fails to consider the average for each version where one version's average could be a 83 and another a 63.
Those who gave Markus positive comments probably luck out by getting exams that suit their strengths. For one question on an exam, I got more than half the points taken off just for using the wrong word (when answering a question to explain a scenario - in mutiple parts)!
For the first two exams, there are 30 MC and the rest essay questions. Each MC is worth 2.5 points. So, if you have the habit of getting a certain number of questions wrong on a MC test, times that number by 2.5 and subtract it from 110 (he gives 10 point extra credit but not all the time; could be less) and then subtract the average amount points lost on essay questions (12 points). That is the score you will likely to get.
If you not happy with that score and/or it will do serious damage to your GPA, do not take his class if you have a choice! Even if it is between him and another professor that gives you a bad vibe, pick the professor with the bad vibe. Chances are that that professor is more upfront. For example (out of many examples): Under peoplesoft, Markus did not even use his name but just his TA's name (Brandy Schmidt) - who is no better than Markus when she takes over. Do not let the number of students overenrolling in his class fool you!

Good professor, but the material isn't the most exciting stuff in the world. He likes using experiment examples, which can get really redundant and he really drills it in to make sure you understand them (you will see them on his exam). His exams are not anything to get stressed over, but you better know the material. The focus is on his notes, which he hands out at the beginning of each class and you have to take notes throughout. Show up to class or you have no hope of passing, its almost 100% in classroom. CPS clicker req'd

220 with Dr. Markus was the best class I've ever taken as an undergraduate at UConn. In fact, I loved it so much that I ended up minoring in Neuroscience.
Everyone complains that he is a harsh grader but he's more than fair if you show up for class and do your part. He's one of the few professors who is enthusiastic about teaching. Simply the best!

Comes off as kinda tough but once you get to know him, he's truely a great guy with a love for what he teaches. The material is a little abstract and hard to understand, but if you study, you'll do fine. Dont take his class if you have difficulties with attendance as there are daily quizzes (aka clicker questions). Overall, I strongly recommend taking 220 with him.

He isnt easy. However if you study hard its not impossible to do well, I got an A- in the class and I got an 88 and a 100 on the two midterms. I hated his clicker questions, you cant really study for them and they are worth 10% of your final grade. He gives good examples to help you understand the concepts of the course. His exams are 50% multiple choice and 50% essay questions. You should definetly read the book to when you study. If you dont want to do work and are looking for an easy professor than I would not recommend Markus, but if you are willing to do work and be challenged then go for it!

I don't understand people who say this class is easy. His handouts make everything more confusing because he doesn't go in order and adds topics. Professors should use powerpoint slides...we're not here to become professional note takers. My arm is about to fall off after each class!!! People who think this guy is fun seriously need to get out more. He is a nice professor, but this is a difficult class and quite boring. I have a high GPA (3.6)and have a tough time with this course.

If you have to take learning, or are considering taking the class, take it with Markus.Etan Markus is definitely one of the best professors I've had at Uconn. His explanations are extremely clear and concise. He stays on topic, unlike most professors. And his lectures are not boring.
He is also the most organized professor! He already prints the notes for you so, that you don't have to worry about trying to listen and copy notes. His exam questions come right out of his notes, and they are straightforward. He also offers extra credit on all his exams. He is very fair.Of course, you should study earlier than the night before the exam.
Overall, his class is interesting and he is a great teacher.

Best professors I've ever had!
I can't imagine that people have failed or done poorly in Dr. Markus' classes. I had him for both 220 and 263W and he was very good in both. As long as you did your share of the work (which wasn't even too much) then you should be fine. Since he specializes in studying learning, he knows how to teach and how to make the material stick in your head. He did it so well that I didn't even have to study much and I got a 97 on his first exam for 220. Seriously, like others have stated already--if you can't handle Markus, you shouldn't even be in college.

Professor Markus is interesting and funny, and always finds a way to include a small clip or example to keep students engaged. He has a unique personality and sense of humor and really seems to understand how students work and what they need in order to learn the material. He is somewhat fast-paced in his lectures, but is well organized and always offers to repeat difficult concepts. I was worried at the beginning of the semester, but got a 95 and 86 on the exams and ended up with a solid A in the class. As long as you attend every class and study the notes he provides, you will be fine and will learn a lot of material in the process. I found it extremely interesting and would definitely recommend this class with him.

This is by far the best class I took as an undergrad at UConn. Dr. Markus challenges you, but also gives you all the tools to succeed. Especially if you're serious about psyc, this is one class that's a must. I've never learned so much.

Markus is the type of professor that you can learn so much from if you put in the effort. A lot of students are complaining that his exams were overly hard- and they really werent. I didnt even ready the book and I got an easy A. You just have to have motivation to go to class every day and to study your notes before the exam. His exams are so straightforward its sick. I felt like I knew what was going to be on the exam before I went to class because he'll stress certain points over and over again. I feel like I gained a true understanding of learning in this class. He gets the class involved in lectures, and goes over what we learned in the previous lecture before every class. AS long as you go to class, and actually pay attention, you get get a hell of a lot out of this class.

This guy is a freakin joke. He was the hardest professor I ever had. His exams were almost as hard as Rickards! Do not ever take this class with him, take Lundquist instead. I heard he is an awesome prof, and I think he teaches this class. Prof. Markus is a total prick that doesn't give a crap about his students. Never take him. He's impossible!

The people who gave Etan bad grades are students that dont belong in a college environment. The material that Etan teaches isn't easy to grasp, but once you understand it you will have a much better idea of what psychology is. I have been able to apply so much of what we learned in class to everyday situations. If you have a passion for psychology this class is for you.

I think Markus is the worst professor I have ever had. His exams are beyond hard and basically make you feel like the whole class was a waste of time for even going. His lecture notes would be helpful if he explained them more clearly. He does not give review sheets for exams so you have to study everything and it is a huge waste of time. I would not recommend him to anyone and I wish I would have known this before I took the class. Definitely would have avoided it.

You people who think he is a good professor must be nuts. This guy is such a prick. He doesn't give a crap if his students do bad on his exams, and is the hardest grader I've ever had. If you don't have exactly what he's looking for you get barely any credit. He wants students to participate in class, but if you give an unclear answer, he'll try to embarrass the crap out of you. All I can say is that this guy is so hard, so unorganized, all his exams are cummulative, including the final, and they are like 60-70% essay!!!! Hello!!!! No such thing as study guides in his class either. This guy is the worst professor I've ever had. Believe me DO NOT take 220 with him!

Best professors I've ever had!
Markus is one of the best professors that I have ever had while I was at UConn. His lecture is in a semi-socratic method format so instead of lecturing the whole time he asks the students questions and tries to get them involved in thinking critically about the material being taught. He also reviews the material from the last class at the beginning of every class which is helpful for some of the more difficult to absorb material. His power point slides are well laid out and entertaining, and he is very organized about the way he teaches. The only caveat that I can give about this professor is that it is imperative that you go to every class. The material is difficult and a good chunk of what he teaches is not in the book.

He is one of the best rofessors I have had at UConn, and this is one of the best classes. While there is a lot of challenging material to learn for somewhat difficult tests, he makes it easy to understand with powerpoint, and he goes over everything from the previous class at the beginning of every new one. The stuff on exams is exactly what was in the notes. He is very organized. He knows the material and presents it well. I loved this class!
