Does Your College Student Need a Fresh Start for Second Semester?

For many new college students, the first semester of college presents a huge learning curve – and not just inside the classroom.  The transition to college, as exciting as it may be, is stressful and difficult for many students.  Some students adjust quickly and well.  Other students may need this first semester to adapt and find their way.  Whether your student had a wonderful first semester, or struggled to find balance, the second semester often provides a new beginning and new outlook – either to improve on a poor term or to take the college experience to a new level.

Students begin the second semester of college with new courses and a semester’s experience behind them, but they may not be sure how best to make the most of this new start.  As a college parent, you may wonder whether your student will be equipped to maximize this second semester.

At College Parent Central, we are committed to helping you, as a college parent, navigate the college experience and support your student.  We’d also like to be able to help your student as well.  We’re offering a subscription newsletter for students, appropriately called FreshStart!  FreshStart! is designed specifically for students in their second semester of college as they think about how they can build on their experiences in the first semester.  Whether your student needs to turn around some poor experiences and decisions or simply build on a strong first semester foundation, FreshStart! may be able to help.

The FreshStart! newsletter will come to your student once each week throughout the second semester and provides tips, suggestions, and sometimes gentle reminders of things to think about and ways to take advantage of opportunities.  Each newsletter covers both basics such as time management, study skills, campus involvement and relationships with faculty members, and also helps students build on leadership opportunities, career exploration, adding value to experiences and how to best prepare for the transition to sophomore year.

Consider registering your student to receive FreshStart!  Visit our FreshStart! informational page to learn more about our subscription newsletter and how to include your student.  We think you’ll find it worth the investment. Subscriptions are now open, but registration closes January 27, 2013. It’s a bit like providing an academic coaching session to your student each week.

Whether or not you choose to sign your student up to receive FreshStart! be sure to have a conversation with your student about taking advantage of the new beginning that a second semester provides.
